Gumtree Guest House — Hotel in George

What an oasis this is. The place is charming and quaint, the rooms and beds comfy. The grounds are lovely. You are central to downtown. Breakfast and the bar are excellent, and Gerry sent us to a fabulous restaurant for dinner (a 3 minute walk away). But what truly lifts the Gum Tree to an exceptional level is the service. Gerry is an amazing host. He welcomes everyone and explains everything. We just loved it and wished we were staying many days because he had so many stories and suggestions. I would have written the above review even before the experience I am about to relate:

Gerry opened two bottles of a special, local gin that we loved. I wanted to take one home to the US for my brother, who was so jealous of the gin we were telling him about. Our friend wanted to take one home as well. It turned out the distillery was closed the day we headed out. Gerry offered to purchase and ship the two bottles of gin to us in Cape Town. He had them couriered and they arrived at our hotel before we did! We would not have forgotten our one night and morning at the Gum Tree even before that extraordinary act. We were nearing the last couple weeks of our 3-months in South Africa and were lucky enough to happen upon Gerry (soft G) and the Gumtree. We initially thought 3-nights, changed to 4-nights and then extended to a 5th night (the benefits of not having a set itinerary). We had the family cottage (2 rooms connected by an interior door) for our family of 4. Gerry was instrumental in helping us really see and enjoy his part of the country - he knows (and loves) it well. Our trip was absolutely enhanced with the opportunity to stay with him. Do yourself a favour - ask for, and take, his recommendations whether they be about places to visit, activities, or places to eat ... you'll be so happy you did. Also, take advantage of the on-site breakfast he serves - delicious and was enough each morning to fill up our teen boys (no easy feat). You'll find Gerry incredibly well-versed and articulate on so many subjects, if you're interested (he takes his cues from you), and just an overall great host. Oh, and the premises, inside and out, are kept pristinely clean. It's a long trip from Canada, but we have no doubts we will return to SA and the Gumtree will definitely be one...

A Serendipitous Gem in Oudtshoorn – Thank You, Jerry!

When our original accommodation in Oudtshoorn fell short of expectations, we found ourselves in urgent need of a last-minute alternative. Enter Jerry—our hero and host at Gumtree Guesthouse. By sheer blessings, one of his guests had just cancelled, and he welcomed us with open arms and zero fuss.

From the moment we arrived, we knew we had stumbled upon something special. The guesthouse is a haven—truly a home away from home. Our room was luxurious, beautifully appointed, and equipped with everything we could possibly need. The surrounding gardens wrapped us in tranquility, and we felt our souls begin to relax almost instantly. It was the turning point of our trip.

The location couldn’t be more perfect—just a short walk from the best coffee shop in Oudtshoorn and a selection of excellent restaurants. Jerry’s warmth, flexibility, and attention to detail made all the difference.
