Northcliff Hill is renowned for its outstanding panoramic views of Johannesburg and the surrounding areas. Boasting an elevation of approximately 1800 feet, the hilltop provides an unobstructed and spectacular vantage point. From here, one can marvel at the sprawling urban landscape, the majestic Magaliesberg mountains, and even catch a glimpse of the iconic Johannesburg skyline.
Visiting Northcliff Hill during sunset or sunrise is an absolute must. Watching as the sun kisses the city and paints the sky with a breathtaking canvas of vibrant colors is an experience unmatched and unforgettable. The awe-inspiring beauty simply takes your breath away, making it a popular spot for couples seeking a romantic atmosphere, as well as photographers hoping to capture the magic.
Aside from the exceptional views, the hill itself is adorned with lush greenery, making it a perfect spot for a picnic or a peaceful walk amidst nature. The surrounding area is teeming with various wildlife, enhancing the rustic ambiance and offering a pleasant escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life.
One of the highlights of Northcliff Hill is the presence of a stunning sculpture named "The Guardian of the North". This artwork, crafted by artist Clive van den Berg, adds an artistic touch to the natural surroundings and serves as a symbolic representation of the hill's significance to the community.
However, accessibility can be a minor hurdle to visiting Northcliff Hill. The steep ascent can prove challenging for those with limited mobility or young children. Additionally, parking can be limited during peak hours, so arriving early is advisable to secure a spot.
Overall, Northcliff Hill is an enchanting destination that deserves the recognition it receives. If you're an avid cyclist, it's definitely worth the effort to make this one of your routes. Just be aware that taking the route up the west side is nothing shy of crippling on a 10spd - I would suggest something with a really beefy casette or a battery, if your legs aren't up to spec.
All that aside, travel in groups as the area is known for muggings - most notably closer to Albert's farm. And try time your excision so you aren't prone in the dark, early or late hours of the day. Best suggestion: take some picnic snacks and enjoy the view...

They have also finally installed a number of benches all along the walkway making sitting and resting along the way much easier. The view is almost completely 360° and is absolutely breathtaking. It is especially lovely at sunset and sunrise but just be sure to have enough people around you to be safe as part of a group. Go ahead and enjoy this little known wonder...
