I've been to Hussar's grill in Rondebosch many times before one of the biggest incentives was the no corkage on wines, so I've had many of wine club meetings at Hussar's grill and was never disappointed but this time I have to say I left with a sour taste in my mouth. For the table they always lay out sweet potato crisps, olives and biltong(wasn't served before with the table but see it got added), sweet potato crisps were a bit soggy and not at all crispy, olives were excellent, biltong was good as usual. We ordered a bottle of wine for the table which was the La Motte millennium. Mains we had 2 x Sirloin on the Bone, Madagascan Pepper Fillet and Blue Cheese Sirloin, I felt that my sirloin on the bone was very average didn't really stand out at all(if anything was a bit salty), the pepper fillet was better by far. We ordered some dessert as well which were good and the waiter did provide us with a serving of their chocolate vodka martini which was very nice but this is where things went from a great evening to unpleasant. We grabbed the bill and settled it with the waiter and we sat around to chat and enjoy relaxing after the meal then the waiter appeared and said to us that we needed to leave the restaurant as the table was going to be used in 5 min, I was confused because normally that is told to you upfront that they need the table at a certain and also it was a Thursday night at 21:00 and there was also a completely empty table next to us and there were no people waiting at the bar for a table. Just wasn't happy with Hussar's grill as I've never had this problem before and thought it was completely rude for the waiter to chase us out not sure if I can find it in me to recommend to other people...
Read moreI booked online for the Tuesday date night special for my boyfriend’s birthday.
I indicated on the booking notes under special dietary requirements that we do not drink alcohol, we drank non-alcoholic beverages all night and double checked that virgin cocktails were non-alcoholic.
When it came to dessert, I simply asked the waitron to write “happy birthday” on the ordered cheesecake plate. She arrived with two chocolate drinks which we again asked if they were non-alcoholic and we were assured that there was no alcohol in them.
Unfortunately, that was not the case and we only found out after each having taken a sip. Irrespective of the various reasons we cannot have alcohol, we indicated clearly that we do not drink and would expect to be able to trust the staff for reliable and accurate information to make the best decisions for our health and well-being. Especially at such a well established restaurant such as this.
I emailed the restaurant that evening as we wanted to leave immediately rather than call on the manager in the restaurant and I have not received a response in 2 days.
I am sorely disappointed in this experience and the way in which it has been handled. I have previously loved my times at this restaurant, but will not be in a...
Read moreThe Hussar Grill in Rondebosch is a local institution and favourite among the locals. It's different from the Camps Bay branch which yes boasts a beatifull location, but the Rondebosch location has it's own charm which is begining to grow on me as I recently moved into the area. It's smaller but beatifully decorated and really intimate. It is always advisable to book a table as it fills up really quickly. I have been on the weekend and in the week admits always full which tells you something about the food! The standard of food is consistently great, steaks cooked to perfection you really can't go wrong with eating here ask for a table at the window facing the little side road in the back section of the restaurant. If you want to try something a little different for a quick midweek dinner my wife and I popped in unannounced and you can sit at the bar (only space for about 6 at the bar) and ordered two burgers which were incredible probably one of the best burgers in Cape Town... I am not one for a dozen different toppings. To judge a good burger it has to be plain with lettuce and tomato that's it. The bill came to R205 because they don't charge corkage and we brought our own wine. Sitting at the bar you also get to know the friendly staff...
