관동8경. 까마득한 옛날부터 동해안 일출 명소였어요. 낙산사 내 위치해 있어 개방시간에 한해 방문할 수 있어요. 새해 해돋이를 볼 수 있게 1월 1일에는 조기 개방하긴 합니다.

누정 정면으로는 동해바다가 탁 트여있어요. 좌측에는 의상대사가 관세음보살을 친견했다는 홍련암이 보입니다. 그 관음보살을 뵙기 위해 수행하던 장소가 이곳 의상대라고 전해져요~

지금과 같은 정자는 1925년에 불교계 독립운동가인 만해 한용운 선생님이 지었습니다. 75년경 화재로 사라지고 95년도 다시 재건했다고 합니다.
