I decided to go with Niall for a one week flying trip in Algodonales after reading on the website about his life journey, in particular the fact that he lived for ten years in Nepal; Remember how passionate we used to feel at young age about following a certain dream; as we grow up most of us lose that magic and get swayed into following a more practical, conventional, socially acceptable path that better suits society and family needs - the peer pressure that few of us escape. We later find ourselves wondering about what could have been and secretly admire those that had the courage or madness to break their shackles, embrace risk and uncertainty and follow “the road less traveled” towards living their dream. Niall is someone like that. I went with him for my first Spain trip on a gut feeling and, as it turns out, my “second brain” was indeed well calibrated: He has a vast flying experience but he won’t overwhelm you with it; He’s an acrobatics and tandem pilot amongst others however as a coach he’ll first and foremost ensure you are safe, confident and ready to progress at a steady pace; He’ll uncover your pilot insecurities and give you a practical approach to address them; He’ll test your resolve and challenge your decisions to encourage sound independent thinking and promote good airmanship; If weather is variable he’ll drive around all day to give you a flying chance; He’ll show you the best of the local cuisine; He’ll fire up your imagination and give you a glimpse into the different world that is visiting and flying in the Himalayas and Nepal; He’ll make you feel at home in his quiet near the mountain retreat and sometimes serve you a cold beer after a long flying day; He’ll never let you do anything stupid but if you really insist he’ll be there to have your back; After meeting Niall you may question you life choices and seriously contemplate about getting a fully remote job and live in a van for a while; He’ll let you pet Winston and if you call him Ginger he won’t be offended; Andalusia southern Spain is an amazing place for flying and recharging one’s batteries; Niall will be there to ensure you get...
Read moreI’ve just returned from an awesome week with FlyNiall. Niall has an extraordinary capacity to assess not only your ability level but also your psyche. He seems to achieve an optimal balance of maximum progression and confidence building. His coaching approach is tailored to the specific needs, desires of each of his students. His refreshingly brash approach was brutally on the money but also considered, caring and witty.
Despite a massive depth and diversity of experience and skill in an activity that has obviously shaped his life’s spiritual journey, his approach remains focused and understated.
Niall’s understanding, passion and local knowledge of meteorology was awesome, as was his commitment to ensure we maximised our opportunities. He refused to be defeated by the apparent unfriendliness of conditions and persevered, exploring opportunities and driving soo many miles to ensure our flying time was maximised. Having talked to members of various other groups on the hills it was obvious that he smashed the competition in this regard! If flying is obviously impossible at a particular time, there is often a ground handling opportunity.
Niall's approach to safety is interactive, educational, and robust. Normally weather conditions are discussed on the way to the landing field, where a full landing site assessment is carried out. An assessment is then carried out at take-off site... We also had a whiteboard classroom "Instabilities & Emergencies" theory session which was super enlightening and covered loads of stuff that I had never been taught at CP level nor on an SIV course.
Lastly but far from leastly the star of the show the adorable pooch "Winston" who accompanied us everywhere and always had our backs!
With regard to any future trips, I'll look no further! Thanks, Niall, for rearranging the pieces of the jigsaw and for an...
