Was staying at gran oasis hotel near the course, it looked lovely from a distance so decided to give it a go. Is is expensive, too expensive. 130 euros and another 40 euros for club hire. I'm Scottish so I know am spoilt when it comes to courses, but for that money here you are looking at championship standard. Which this isn't!
But my main complaint was the cold welcome. Not friendly at all. Didn't explain the course, facilities etc to me, just took my money and that was it. When I eventually found someone to give me my clubs he was pretty rude. I asked whether any balls or tees were in the bag. He laughed and said I had to walk all way back to main shop to buy them. Balls fair enough, but not even some complimentary or old tees?! So after a walk back to shop I also asked if they could give me a pitch mark repairer, no another 10 Euros, which I refused to pay! That's a false economy as the greens were covered in pitch marks, no doubt because people like me didn't want to pay for a repairer tool! At that point I didn't ask about a glove as knew what the answer would be 🙄
Then the range, I asked at reception when I was paying, she pointed vaguely in the direction. Didn't mention that you needed 1euro coins. So a third walk back to the shop for me! Crazy stuff. For 130 euros I'd expect a complimentary basket of balls. Or at least to be told I needed coins. Just no effort to make your visit welcome at all. The guy at the starter box also treated me as if I was wasn't welcome, sighing when I asked for a bottle of water.
Then the course. It is ok but nothing special. I played 9am and it was soaking wet, they obviously water heavily early morning. So my trainers were wet after one hole. Also a strong chemical smell all over coarse. And I noticed what looked like nice water features were actually filled with a chemical green/blue fluid! Grass was long in places and patchy. Tees weren't great. Greens very slow. Fairways ok.
Finally, I was walking as it wasn't too hot, but there were workers zooming around the course almost every hole in buggies. Had to keep waiting for them to cross etc. just a really bad vibe.
Not recommended I'm afraid, especially...
Read moreVery impressed with Golf Las Américas! I played here with my son and father-in-law while we were on holiday, staying in Playa De Las Américas. It's a 30 minute walk from the main beach resort, so would recommend getting a taxi which is about €8 each way. The course if beautifully green and well maintained. They have a driving range and simple putting green for practicing before heading out to play. All the staff were friendly and happy for us to play regardless of our relatively high handicaps, being fairly new to the game. The course itself had a fabulous mixture of different holes. The geographical position of the course gives you long flat holes, undulating dogs legs and a very interesting multi-terraced fairway. Personally I walked the course, which was challenging at times in 30 degree heat, while my son and father-in-law whizzed round in the buggy they hired. Green fees were fair and the hire of the buggy and clubs we felt equally good value. The only small downside to our visit, was the fact the clubhouse closed at 7pm, just as we finished our round. We would have like to have been able to sit on the terrace overlooking the course and had a drink or two afterwards. We had a look round a few days earlier and enjoyed a drink then, when the bar staff were lovely and attentive. If we go back to Playa De Las Américas, I'd love to play another round here and see if I can...
