Booked a tour via astrocamp.es and had an amazing look inside this facility, as part of a larger tour of the El Roque de los Muchachos complex. We were pleasantly surprised that it was in full operation during our tour — we had to step off the central platform so they could move the telescope around for various tests. Our tour guide was a former software engineer who worked at the observatory, so she had very in-depth technical knowledge about the facility as well as plenty of amusing stories about her experience there. She's also written a book that you can purchase at the end of the tour. Highly recommended.

GTC is awesome, if you do get a chance to have a tour then do go! It currently has the biggest 10.4m optical telescope in the world, with 500 tons rotating on an oil reservoir. There is a room with 3 projector walls that show a neat video for visitors, great to see the spectrum spread across 30 metres of walls. I was very lucky to be part of a group that went up to the telescope and see it moving, superb and to see the primary mirror and the secondary mirror as well as the detectors was illuminating.

Beautiful and mesmerizing geological site and awesome must see site for astrophotographers, astronomers and citizen scientists. Beautiful pristine skies, nature and scientific installations like the Gran Telescopio de Canarias, the Galileo telescope and the MAGIC Cherenkov Telescope Array to mention just a few. Unfortunately all tours are off because of COVID regulations but the sight and the skies are well worth the trip for amateur and professional astronomers and geologists.

View was tremendous and the observation deck was good to reach by car. However the road towards the top of the mountain was real long and exhausting, since there are a lot of turns. Nevertheless, the view is breath taking. Also a little path towards another view point is definitely not for the ones with fear of heights. Additionally, egg-shaped/mirror space rays were also a tip to take a look at.

As an astronomer to be myself visiting the Grantecan was very cool, with a nice tour and information about the telescope. If your interested in Astronomy (or want to tell others you visited the largest optical Telescope in the world!), I highly recommend visiting the Grantecan
