These watchtowers were designed to warn of attacks by Turks and Berbers. Built in the second half of the 16th century as a defence against Algerian pirates, it was declared a Site of Cultural Interest in October 2002. In 1528, the Cortes of Monzón agreed to the construction of works to defend the coast, as well as the creation of a coast guard. These watchtowers were designed to warn of attacks by Turks and Berbers who came by sea and landed on the coast to invade it. Its defensive system was reinforced by spies who informed the Valencian coast of possible attacks from the ports of North Africa. As a result of this, during the 16th century there were around thirteen watchtowers and defence towers on the coast of the province of Valencia. The Guaita del Puig tower is a truncated cone-shaped tower built with reddish rodeno stones. It has a diameter of six metres at its base and a height of eight and a half metres. It has three floors and is covered by a semicircular vault. It has loopholes, which are long, narrow openings through which pirates were shot, and some windows. For its defence there were two soldiers on foot and two on horseback. Communication between the towers was made by means of bonfires that were lit on the top...

Military watch tower, dating back to 1528 in order to warn of approaching Turkish or Berber incursions by sea. There were thirteen of these built along the Valencian coast, once invaders were spotted then a large fire was ignited. Like falling dominos, the other towers started fires in order to alert the entire coast. The tower is the only item of interest in this area, but has a rather important historical value. The boardwalk begins here, so makes a nice beginning, or end to a walk after lunch. Long bike ride from Valencia, and unfortunately quite a bit on mixed...
