Suriname is a small, diverse country located on the northeastern coast of South America, bordered by Brazil, Guyana, and French Guiana, with the Atlantic Ocean to the north. It is the least populated country in South America, with just over half a million inhabitants, and its capital and largest city is Paramaribo. Suriname’s history is marked by colonization, primarily by the Dutch, and it gained independence from the Netherlands in 1975. The country is known for its rich cultural diversity, including a mix of Indigenous, African, Indian, Javanese, Chinese, and European influences. Suriname's official language is Dutch, but many people also speak Sranan Tongo, an English-based creole, along with other languages like Hindi and Javanese. The country is also famous for its lush rainforests, which cover about 90% of its land, making it a hotspot for...

Fort Zeelandia has a rich history in Suriname. Nicely located by the river for obvious reasons by the colonialists. Every collection. The artefact tells a fascinating story of the country. Still, I wasn't prepared for the emotion and impression left in me by the two tiny prisons located in this facility where formerly enslaved people were kept. On a positive note though, the story of three heroes ( I can't recall their names) who led a successful rebellion against the colonialists leaves me with a...

The Zeelandia Fort in Paramaribo is a small, but well-preserved historic location with a museum with informative exhibits. The riverside location provides scenic views, but the fort's signage could benefit from more detailed English translations. A good visit for history enthusiasts. Certainly, it’s a historical gem, offering a glimpse into Suriname's colonial past.
