The bronze statue by sculptor Richard Kissling was inaugurated on August 28, 1895, at the foot of an old tower. It shows the Swiss national hero with his crossbow and accompanied by his son.

Uri was one of the three original cantons in Switzerland that started the Swiss Confederation or Confoederatio Helvetica, in Latin, from where the CH comes from. The monument is simple with nice paintings that tells William Tells story.

This monument is impressive both outside and inside. I definitely recommend you to visit the inside part, an impressive tower that will give you a fantastic view of the surrounding neighborhood and mountains. The tower includes a lot of explanation about the history of Switzerland and Wilhelm Tell, and you can also have an audio guide of 8 minutes atop of the tower

Das Hintergrundbild auf dem Turm stammt vom Kunstmaler Hans Sandreuter. Hinter den zwei Statuen ist auf einer grossen Bronzeplatte folgende Inschrift angebracht: Erzæhlen Wird Man Von Dem Schützen Tell So Lang Die Berge Steh’n Auf Ihrem Grunde. Für die Erstellung der Statue wurde ein Wettbewerb ausgeschrieben, an dem Kissling als Sieger hervorging. Er durfte die Statue ausführen, musste sie aber nach den Wünschen der Auftraggeber überarbeiten. Der zweite Preis ging an Robert Dorer, der dritte an Raimondo Pereda, der vierte an Gustav Siber.

It was a cold and windy day, so we half enjoyed it. The monument itself is quite impressive, it stands tall in the middle of the plaza. It was interesting to see it from a few feet away. You can also climb up the tower to have a view of the city Altdorf. It's free. Because of coronavirus, we were not able to sit at one of the many cafés around the square. But there's a confectionery and bakery a few meters away that's...

Cool monument, you can go inside the tower, the door is closed but it is unlocked. Inside the tower you can find a small museum that describes the history of the construction of the tower and the tale of Wilhelm Tell. The museum is also in English. Also you can see the mechanism of the tower clock moving. Entrance is free and I was able to enter after the published closing time on Google...
