This not so old tower, was initially constructed by the Swiss-English banker and member of the British parliament, William Haldimand, around 1830 on his property Denantou, on the eastern side of the little stream la Vuachère and then moved to the western side in 1901 several decades after Haldimand's death. When I moved to Lausanne some 30 years ago, it was almost completely covered in ivy which is damaging the fragile molasses stone but this was removed when the tower was last renovated around 2000. It is now surrounded by a parking and marks the start of the popular walking path eastwards along the lake towards the towns of Pully and Lutry. It has also give the name to a nearby bus stop. At best there is a myth about its creation, telling us it was the result of a competition between three wealthy men to build the most romantic tower ever. In fact the two others already had built their towers in other parts of Lausanne, of which only one remains today.
