If you do an easy 30min (each way) hike, there is no need to take the expensive funicular.
🚍 Bus 12 to “Brè, Paese”. Cars can park here as well.
📍 From the bus stop, follow the sign towards “Monte Brè”. There are two routes: via Bare and via Scantinata alla Torretta, I took the quicker route.
🥾 Hiking Trail: Brè, Paese to Monte Brè via Scantinata alla Torretta (Return Route). It is also possible to take the more challenging trail to Gandria.
📸 Not many views along the trail (basically seeing steps and mainly trees) but there are views from “Punto Panoramico” and “Ristorante panoramico Vetta Monte Brè”.
⛰ Stats (according to my smartwatch for both ways combined): distance 2.2 km; elevation +100m -100m; 40min moving time; 55min elapsed time.
🌀 Difficulty: easy (around 800 steps of well paved stairs, gentler slope towards the top).
If you are planning a full day itinerary, after Monte Tamaro, I highly recommend to take a walk at the olive trail (Sentiero dell'olivo) to Gandria, then take a boat...
Read moreIn my opinion, having traveled to many places in Switzerland and Ticino, Monte Brè is very overrated! There is one-two good panoramic views once you get there (next to the restaurant) … But for me, it is more about the principle - e.g. one should question the value of going to Monte Brè with the funicular vs. the quality of the views there. It is probably way better to get a 15 km hike to the south around Morcote instead - better views and for free! 26CHF for a return adult fare and 13CHF for children - not really justified! If you don’t have time going around Ticino, I would...
Read moreAs others noted and I didn't really take the comments in; not much access to public space up there. Unless you use one of the two restaurants that dominate the frontage. Weird. Why the hype and advertising???? It's like spending a lot of time.getting to the ride up and connecting half way and all for a small scenic overlook. Which is beautiful. But not worth the 3 hours I...
