The Gornergrat (3,135 m) is a rocky ridge of the Alps, overlooking the Gorner Glacier south of Zermatt in Switzerland. The Gornergrat is located between the Gornergletscher and Findelgletscher and offers a view of more than 20 four-thousand metre peaks, whose highest are Monte Rosa, Lyskamm, Matterhorn, Dom and Weisshorn.
Gornergrat is one of places very close to my heart. I have been here multiple times and each time it still captivates me. It is pretty easy to reach to Gornergrat bahn, this is an independent company from Switzerland Railways so your Day passes / Flexi passes etc will not work here. You will have to come to the office and buy the tickets. To reach to Gornergrat you first need to reach Zermatt, the best way to reach is take a train from Zurich to Visp and then get the Matterhorn Bahn from Visp to Zermatt. Once you reach Zermatt then walk out of station and go to your right. you will easily see Gornergrat Ticket offices in yellow. you can buy tickets from here and board the train from here. Although the day passses or Flexi passes dont work but the Half Fare card will work, people holding Flexi Passes will also get 50% Discount. Children up to 6 years travel free and between 6 and 16 pay 50% of the Fare. The ticket is 41 CHF without any discounts one way and 82 CHF return without any discounts.
The trains stops briefly at a no of stations: Zermatt - Findelbach - Riffelalp - Riffelberg - Rotenboden - Gornergrat. You can get down at any station and catch the next train on same ticket if its valid upto Gornergrat. The timings differ depending on Months and hours but roughly it runs from 0700 - 1900 and varies between 1-2 every hour. My Suggestion is definitely get down at Rotenboden, if weather is in your favor you can walk to riffelsee easy walk of maybe 15-20 Mins you can catch a very nice reflection of Matterhorn in the Lake. Also the hike to Monte rosa starts from here. Other 2 you can probabaly get fown at riffelberg if you want to eat, Hotel riffelberg is right there in case you dont want to pay at Pricey Gornergrat restaurant. There are several hikes that are connected to riffelberg but this is more of a review of Gornergrat so we will stick to that
3100 Kulm Hotel is located at the top of Gornergrat, it has rooms, suites, restaurant, Gift shop for souveniers. There is a big Outdoor deck to take pictures and you can view the glaciers from ease of wooden plattforms. this place is also a host of Observatories, there are 2 astronomical telescopes including a Infra red Telescope as well.
Also avaialble are Sunrise Excursions, trust me you will love this experience, its one in a...

Gornergrat is more than just a mountain – it's a gateway to a world of natural wonder. Nestled in the heart of the Swiss Alps, this majestic peak offers an experience that is nothing short of breathtaking. The journey to the summit is an adventure in itself, as you hop aboard a charming cogwheel train that winds its way through picturesque landscapes, gradually revealing the grandeur that awaits.

Read moreA must visit place in Zermatt! Probably one of the best places to see the famous Matterhorn. A ticket should be purchased to get on the Gornergrat train, i think you can do this online. We purchased ours in the station just right in front of the Tasch - Zermatt station. The train ride was approximately 40 minutes, but the view was amazing, so it was really enjoyable. There were several stops which you could choose, with Gornergrat being the last and the top of the train ride. The view is just stunning, and something you'll regret if you didn't do this while in Zermatt. There is a cafe in Gornergrat where you can grab some lunch or snacks or just need a place to heat yourself up. Ticket price is quite expensive (88 Euros), but i think it's worth it!...
