Our trip to Zermatt in October felt like a dream. The town was pleasantly quiet, allowing us to fully soak in its beauty. Although we had planned to take the train to Sunnegga for the 5-lakes hike, we discovered that the only train running after September goes to Gornergrat. This turned out to be a pleasant surprise for us in the end. The journey to Gornergrat was breathtaking, especially when we got off the train at Riffelsee just before dusk. The mountain landscape was transformed by the soft golden light, creating a stunning, multidimensional view that was absolutely fascinating. For anyone visiting, I would highly recommend sitting on the right side of the train for the best Matterhorn panoramic views. Zermatt is truly a paradise, and we really hope I could return in the summer one day.

A must-see in Switzerland! A man in the Gornergratbahn office told me it wasn’t possible to hike to the lake because of the snow but NO! It is! And it is really beautiful with the ice on the water! One of the most gorgeous scenery of my life! There aren’t that many people (maybe only in May). Be careful with the train timetables! The hike is not that difficult and it is quite easy to not get lost! I suggest this planning: Zermatt-Gornergrat by train (the train has large glass and it is more beautiful while going up than going down because trains are not the same) Go the panoramic viewpoint on top of Gornergrat Hike down to Riffelsee Hike down to Riffelberg to take the train to Zermatt

We took the first train from Zermatt, Gornergrat bahn at 07:00 to see the sunrise on the Matterhorn and the reflection in the Riffelsee. Absolutely stunning. To go to the Riffelsee, you get out of the train at Rotenboden station. After a walk around the area we took the train one stop further to Gornergrat station to have a 360 view on the mountains including the highest peak in Switzerland, the Dufourspitze, which is part of the Monta Rosa. Train tickets can be booked via the SBB app or ordered at the desk of the Gornergrat bahn. As stunning as the views are……unfortunatelly the effects of global warming are visible too. Please leave a thumbs up/like if you think this review was useful.

The view is stunning! Clear sky, thin air and really breathtaking display makes the Matterhorn so close to us, and the Riffelsee is frozen, like a mirror, yeah we got 2 Matterhorn in 1 photo. We were there in the beginning of Nov, and we took the gear train from Zermatt GGB, which is just opposite to Zermatt railway station. It took around 30 minutes reaching Rotenboden stop, then we just followed the path, or footpath, to reach Rafflesee, very close to Rotenboden. If the weather allows, like our case, you can follow the path to Riffelberg stop, it took us 2 hours for just 2.5km, as the trail is very slippery and we also could not stop taking lots of photos.

The view of the Matterhorn mountain and its reflection in this lake is absolutely amazing, and it's my top favorite thing to see in Zermatt. The first time I visited early in the morning, I felt really sad because thick clouds covered the mountain, and I couldn't see a thing. However, when those clouds finally disappeared, the view became truly spectacular. The sight of the Matterhorn and its perfect reflection in the lake's calm waters is something I'll always cherish. It's like a dream come true for nature lovers like me, and it's a must-see when you're in Zermatt.

My tips: - Check the weather on meteoswiss app (they're really accurate) - Get on the 1st or 2nd train up to avoid the crowds - Enjoy the views! - Didn't have any issues buying the ticket on the spot (used SBB EasyRide) Went on the first train up to see the golden kissed Matterhorn, sadly the train had issues and we missed it. We were told to get off and take the next train (which was 30 minutes later). Didn't really get upset, these things can happen, I was just unlucky (so just keep this in mind)
