Our trip to Zermatt in October felt like a dream. The town was pleasantly quiet, allowing us to fully soak in its beauty. Although we had planned to take the train to Sunnegga for the 5-lakes hike, we discovered that the only train running after September goes to Gornergrat. This turned out to be a pleasant surprise for us in the end.
The journey to Gornergrat was breathtaking, especially when we got off the train at Riffelsee just before dusk. The mountain landscape was transformed by the soft golden light, creating a stunning, multidimensional view that was absolutely fascinating.
For anyone visiting, I would highly recommend sitting on the right side of the train for the best Matterhorn panoramic views. Zermatt is truly a paradise, and we really hope I could return in the...

One of the most gorgeous scenery of my life! There aren’t that many people (maybe only in May). Be careful with the train timetables!
The hike is not that difficult and it is quite easy to not get lost!
I suggest this planning: Zermatt-Gornergrat by train (the train has large glass and it is more beautiful while going up than going down because trains are not the same) Go the panoramic viewpoint on top of Gornergrat Hike down to Riffelsee Hike down to Riffelberg to take the...
Read moreWe took the first train from Zermatt, Gornergrat bahn at 07:00 to see the sunrise on the Matterhorn and the reflection in the Riffelsee. Absolutely stunning. To go to the Riffelsee, you get out of the train at Rotenboden station. After a walk around the area we took the train one stop further to Gornergrat station to have a 360 view on the mountains including the highest peak in Switzerland, the Dufourspitze, which is part of the Monta Rosa. Train tickets can be booked via the SBB app or ordered at the desk of the Gornergrat bahn. As stunning as the views are……unfortunatelly the effects of global warming are visible too. Please leave a thumbs up/like if you think this...
