橫嶺古道環狀線大致上分成四個部份 : 第一段是從湖山路的步道入口(距公車總站約10分鐘)到紅壇部份, 也是真正的橫嶺古道, 步道鋪面以泥土/碎石/竹葉為主, 僅有入口處有少許階梯, 坡度不大, 相當好走, 兩側竹林與保安林蔽蔭, 還算涼快, 但局部路段卻見路面埋有較大石塊與碎磚塊, 不理解其原因; 若單走這段步道者, 可開車停在紅壇前的大廣場, 廣場旁姐妹楓香樹下有許多座位, 休息乘涼均宜; 前行約50m則右轉進入半嶺步道, 半嶺步道由天母上行至此, 環形步道僅包括其最後一段, 此段以花崗岩鋪面平路或階梯為主, 路況頗佳; 離開半嶺步道後, 銜接的路段則是較為複雜, 除了需跨越產業道路或是以柏油路連接外, 許多部份穿梭於民宅之間, 與其說是步道, 倒比較像是民宅間連通的走道, 只是整修得比較漂亮, 也因此, 在許多轉折處需要稍微找一下路標, 否則即有迷路之可能; 最後一段則是湖山國小步道, 入口處有個不明顯的指標, (錯過則會續行產業道路, 往六窟 ?), 這段步道路況與半嶺古道的路況接近, 但以階梯為主, 不難走但略需體力;, 末端出口會在湖山路上, 在環形步道起點下方約30m處; 要說這段步道的缺點,...

單程約850公尺的《橫嶺古道》，橫繞紗帽山的山麓而行，沿途林蔭環繞平易近人的山徑，適合一家老少緩緩步行。走在青鬱幽幽的竹林路段，彷彿回到日本京都嵐山的錯覺，踩在鋪滿木屑的路面，幽靜的山林風情讓人輕鬆愜意。

古道終點有一個小巧特別的紅磚廟宇「紅壇」，一旁百年楓香的 楓香姊妹樹 高聳林立，站在樹下仰望樹形交疊生長的優美，可以想見秋日來此欣賞滿滿楓紅的萬種風情。光影斜射的氛圍，點點星芒的美麗，更顯得親臨秘境怡然自得的寫意。
