Yunlin Hand Puppet Museum — Attraction in Huwei Township

It is not very large, in half an hour you will have seen it. I visited the place together with a local expert. Accros the street there is a very nice restaurant for after your visit at the museum. They serve boiling soup over your personal burner, so you can cook your own food. On the corner there is a former house of a Mayor (pre WW2). It has some details about sustainable solutions for the future. Some are a little far fetched, like painting all high raises like a zebra, to cool them off. Other have more practical impact, you have to decide for yourself. Parking is easy at a public parking place. This is paid parking, so it is safe. I know there is also a starbucks in the area, but for visiting Taiwan, a Starbucks is not local culture. It is a small palm puppets or glove puppetry museum which records and displays palm puppetry development in Taiwan, especially for its origin in Yunlin County. It also documents with mapping of the puppetry groups and technician support service providers in Yunlin County.

The best part of the museum are its display of variety of puppets with stereo sound effect of puppet show music when the puppet shows were played in local Taiwan and on TV.

The museum is a perfect place for the parents with kids and for the X generations who grew up with puppet shows on TV and on local temple celebration platforms.

雲林有「台灣布袋戲之鄉」的稱號，大力推薦來到這裡必須要預約導覽人員解說，除了可以更了解在台灣的布袋戲文化，還能稍微認識到這座建築與周邊街區的歷史由來！

在日本殖民時期（1920-1937 年間），布袋戲館這棟建築物曾是 " 虎尾郡役所 "（類似現今的行政機關功能），對面則是 " 虎尾合同廳舍 "（包含了警察報案台、居民集會所、消防隊），沿著對街遠望便是虎尾糖廠的所在地。

從上述可以得知，這裡的周邊街區是過去日本人較常待且重視的地帶，那郡役所這樣的歷史空間，也是目前台灣少數僅存的日本時期郡役所建築物。

如果以虎尾一日遊的背包規劃，這非常適合當作一個起始點，用步行的方式就能在附近尋找不少過去歷史的蹤影，而且有些很棒的小店也等待你的發掘！

If you're planning a backpacking trip to Taiwan for a day trip to Yunlin-Huwei, this is a great place to start, and you can find a lot of history in the neighborhood on foot, and there are some great little stores just waiting to be discovered !

✅ 很棒的事（Great part of the location）： 有常設展區 / 特展區等介紹台灣布袋戲的歷史由來，同時也有影音區、可製作戲偶的 DIY 體驗區，是個認識台灣獨特戲偶文化的好空間。 平假日都可免費入內參觀，如果需要導覽或其他 DIY 才需額外付費。 推薦預約導覽，人員很專業，散客或團客皆可以到 Facebook 訊息預約，當天是年輕的女館長帶我們走了近一小時，每人 200 元。 內有蹲式廁所、無障礙廁所以及飲水機等，好像還有輕食區可小做休息。

⚠️ 可加強的（Areas that could be enhanced）： 布袋戲展區、影音室在 1F，金光大戲院、創意工作基地在 2F，可惜這裡沒有電梯或無障礙升降設備，如果二樓有戲偶表演，無障礙設施稍嫌不足。 預約導覽的連結有 google 表單、surveycake 表單，建議統合成一個，預約的旅客和後端行政較不會混亂喔～ • 同步提醒如有不知道怎麼預約的旅客，也可以直接撥打布袋戲館的電話做聯繫。
