As someone who's not at all an art snob but is nevertheless accustomed to enjoying masterfully curated art museums, where the space is as carefully crafted as the choice of content within it (thinking NYC's Whitney, London's Tate, Boston's ICA), the best I can describe this museum is...cute. They made a good effort, at least. Asia in general lags far behind the West in their art museums, not only in the collections, but also in how they choose to present it. The Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts is spacious, but not airy. Once you leave the main atrium, you enter sterile boxy rooms not well lit, and not conducive to the display of the pieces therein. As for the art... again, they've tried, given that they're likely operating on limited funds and resources. There are some interesting pieces throughout, but much of it screams "amateur hour" (hanging yarnbombed ornaments, sculpted driftwood dumped on the floor in front of a video project of waves on a shore, a collection of water samples from the local Love River that probably belonged at a science museum instead). None of it is awful; but none of it is particularly compelling either. I note that other reviewers describe it as situated in a "beautiful" and "vast" park - neither of which are accurate adjectives. Like the museum building itself, the park is showing its age: rundown concrete outdoor spaces, unkempt lawns, and not large at all - good for a 30 minute stroll at most. Regardless of my tepid review, in a city with very few cultural highlights, I'd still suggest a visit, but no need to block off any more than 2 hours of...

📝【First Visit Record】Supplemental Record 2022/12/24
I was incredibly fortunate on my first visit to encounter an exhibition by the Japanese textile design master Tsuzuku (皆川明/つづく), as well as the "Island-Tracing Journeys" exhibition co-curated by several contemporary artists from Taiwan, and the Doctors Without Borders exhibition in the basement. My happiness index was off the charts. The museum is located within a large green space, where you could easily spend half a day, very comfortably.
🔐 The locker is on the basement floor.

Here, you can enjoy the beauty of art, gain enlightenment and inspiration, and feel the power and...
Read moreThe new demolition of the park is awful. Wasted so much tax dollars for basically same thing and less. The broken and uneven sidewalk did not get fixed, but torn down the perfectly good building and turn it into green land. This is the dumbest project I’ve ever seen. Now is a horrible park that prohibits bikes, skateboard, skates, etc. what is the point of having a park, but no one can use it. I wonder how much money did Mayor Han stole from this meaningless project.(2020)
The park is finally a park again. Finally people can ride bikes and use sport equipment throughout the park again. Most importantly, the sidewalks are finally fixed. The park is beautiful now, filled with flowers throughout the...
