if blue mansion in penang is 5 stars, i’d rate the wufeng lin family garden 3 stars. guided tours and audio guides are only in chinese so your experience will be greatly affected by whether you can understand chinese. most of the written descriptions inside are in chinese as well. their only english brochure is mostly praise for the lin family and the reconstruction, but hardly describes anything in detail. i learned that after the earthquake, they tried to reuse original materials for the reconstruction through conversation with a staff member. she also told me the 2nd building walls are the only ones which survived the earthquake. still, even without much explanation, one can appreciate the splendor of the buildings, especially the family theater/stage. when the tour groups leave and you can walk around alone, the grounds feel peaceful and serene. 250ntd was indeed more expensive than other taiwanese sites, but it was worth it considering the...
Read moreNot worth the effort to go if you're not Taiwanese. You can only see the house via a guided tour, which is only provided in Chinese. My boyfriend didn't understand Chinese, so I tried translating for him. But even I had trouble understanding the guide sometimes, because she often used a local dialect during the tour, and spoke too softly and too fast (I don't know why she didn't bother using the mic/headset that was provided). What's even worse - she actually excluded us. During the free tea session, she was friendly to everyone in the group and asked after them - everyone except us. Nevermind that I could clearly speak and understand Chinese. We didn't feel welcomed at all. This place is geared towards domestic tourists only, and will exclude anyone who does not understand Chinese or the...
Read moreAs someone who loves history, this place is a must go. The ticket price is a little on the expensive side compared to other local museum, but they have a spacious area to sightsee. The employees are all friendly and welcoming, and were very insightful with any question you may have. They have the only surviving theatre area made from wood as well, which in my opinion, is quite interesting. The architecture and symbolism are great and really unique. It can be a little bit warm during the summer but you will spend most of the sightseeing inside or at least under a roof, so no worries. Parking within the area can be a little expensive since it’s a tourist area too, so...
