A little overrated I fear, and foreign visitors just looking for a swim and relaxation may be disappointed. The beach, however, is big enough. Surfing takes place at one end and is over-utilised if my visit today was anything to go by. Some useful waves to practice surfing; the casual swimmer may get decapitated so swim opposite the visitor centre and up. Be warned the waves, even small ones, can be quite ferocious and the riptides strong. NT$20 for a shower at the visitor centre, but only 2 minutes of water! Drifters pub, just right of the railway station, is popular with foreigners at night-time. Overall, I prefer Fulung beach closer to Keelung actually but beginner surfers can't go...

I’ve come here countless times on weekends when the weather’s nice! At first, it might not seem that impressive—especially if you’re used to golden sand beaches—but Waiao has its own unique charm. I love how the beach stretches with Guishan Island visible in the distance on one side, and mountains rising on the other. The contrast is stunning.

The main activity here is surfing, which is both fun and relaxing. Since Yilan’s weather tends to be cloudy, it adds a cool vibe and keeps things from getting too hot under the sun.

They also host events like music festivals and other activities from time to time, which adds to the atmosphere. Definitely one of the places I...

Due to the volcanic material in the vicinity, Waiao Beach is also known to be a beautiful black sand beach. The landscape surrounding it is beautiful and you can see a lone island (Turtle Island) in the distance. According to Charles, the area can get pretty crowded during the summer months.

Near the entrance to the beach, you’ll be able to find No.9 Cafe at the Beach Waiao. A beautifully appointed cafe that overlooks the beach, serving a good mix of western selection such as waffles, pizzas and beers as well as local foods such as beef noodles. Credit cards are accepted at No. 9 Cafe at the Beach Waiao...

My favourite public beach in Northern Taiwan! Clean and a lot of space, it's not overcrowded or anything. The sand is very comfy to work on. This beach is one of the only ones where swimming is allowed or at least no one is stopping you. There's one downside to this beach though, that being there's no designated area for swimmers or spots where surfers aren't allowed. There should be an area where no surfers are allowed in order to protect swimmers and people that go into the water. A couole of times surfers nearly bumoed into me.

A lovely place to enjoy a day at the beach. This is a large and clean beach with fine (slightly dark) sand with plenty of space to enjoy a relaxing afternoon. The beach can be easily accessed by car or by train (the train station is 3 min walking distance). There are fantastic views of the mountains and Turtle Island. The ocean is a bit rough (not for beginners) and it is very popular for surfing. There are plenty of small shops near the beach offering beverages and surfing equipment rental. Highly recommended!
