วัดบางโพโอมาวาสสร้างปลายสมัยกรุงธนบุรี ราว พ.ศ. 2300 เดิมชื่อ "วัดโพคาราม" ต่อมาเปลี่ยนชื่อมาเป็น "วัดบางโพโอมาวาส" เมื่อราว พ.ศ. 2482 สมัยอาจารย์ห้อย วุฑฒีญาโณ (มงคลกฤษ) เป็นเจ้าอาวาส
