Atatürk için İstanbul Belediyesi tarafından 1935 yılında mimar Seyfi Arkan'a projelendirilen köşk, yazlık bir konut olarak yapılldı ve aynı yıl 14 Ağustos tarihinde kullanıma açıldı. Atatürk, 1936'da uzunca bir süre burada yaşamış, siyasal ve bilimsel toplantılar için köşkü özellikle kullanmış, aralarında İngiliz Kralı VIII. Edward ve Madam Simpson'un da bulunduğu kimi önemli konukları burada ağırlamıştı. Florya'da ayrıca eski Ayastefonos Manastırına ait kalıntıların bulunduğu geniş alanda Atatürk'ün emriyle bir koruluk meydana getirildi. Çamların süslediği bir koruluğa Atatürk korusu adı verildi. Florya bahçesi de halka açık park olarak düzenlendi. Bugün Milli Saraylar İdaresi'nin elinde Cumhurbaşkanlığı köşkü olarak kullanılan Florya Deniz Köşkü'nün geniş bir salonu kütüphanesi dinlenme ve yatak odaları, banyosu var.
