I visited Edirne City Forest (Söğütlük Millet Bahçesi) with my wife on a Saturday afternoon, 21 June 2025, after a leisurely stroll across the historic Meriç Bridge. We entered the park from Lozan Caddesi and quickly found a peaceful picnic spot under the shade. The picnic areas are well maintained and ideal for relaxing with family or friends. We spent time exploring the walking trails in the southern section forest, surrounded by dense forest—mostly old oaks and pines. The fresh air, cool shade, and natural sounds made it feel worlds away from the busy city. The tranquility here is remarkable, and the forest truly acts as a “green lung” for Edirne, improving air quality and providing much-needed respite during the hot season. Our visit ended near the prayer building, which was under construction at the time. Afterwards, we continued our walk along the riverside path, heading to Lalezar Restaurant to complete our afternoon. What stands out about this place: The park is family-friendly, with playgrounds, picnic zones, barbecue areas, cycling paths, and even a riverside tea garden. It’s free to enter and well suited for families, couples, or solo visitors seeking nature and peace. The riverside promenade is particularly scenic, with beautiful views, especially at sunset. There’s a strong sense of cleanliness and respect here, making it a great place to unwind. Practical notes: “Land snorkeling” or wandering off the marked trails is not allowed—visitors must remain on official walking paths to protect the forest ecosystem. Weekends can get busy, especially at the picnic areas, so arriving earlier is best if you want a good spot. Interesting facts and local insights: The forest covers about 30 hectares and is home to native oaks, pines, elms, and diverse wildlife—including birds, turtles, and small mammals. Historically, this area has been a popular leisure retreat since Ottoman times, used by locals and the royal court alike for picnics and festivities. The forest is frequently used for family gatherings, especially on weekends and holidays, and is valued for both its ecological and economic importance (estimated at 100 TL recreational value per visitor). It’s a hub for outdoor activities—walking, cycling, fishing, birdwatching, and group exercises are all common here. Local schools sometimes use the park for nature education and community events. The area is also featured in folk stories, with some Edirne residents recalling tales of hunts and celebrations held here in the past. Overall, Edirne City Forest offers a clean, well-kept, and tranquil setting—perfect for anyone looking to escape city life for a few hours and enjoy the beauty of nature by the river.
