Me and my husband had just bought a new narrowboat that was moored on the River Weaver so we had to travel to the Boat Lift to be lifted up onto the canal. Was excited and apprehensive at the same time as I don't have a head for heights. Needn't have worried. The Boat Lift staff were really nice and chatty and put you at ease. They instructed you what to do to get into the lift then what to do while ascending in the lift. The ride was very smooth and it took less than five minutes. Really enjoyed the ride and no sign of vertigo as you are well encased and secure for the journey. At the top another member of the Boat Lift staff was waiting for us and again was pleasant and chatty. Once ready to leave the lift we were instructed again what to do, step by step. All in all a really lovely experience. Mostly because of the staff and the friendly and experienced way they handled the situation. Safety was top of the list at all times but without stressing you. Well done to the staff and a...
Read moreLovely morning spent on admiring the beauty of engineering ;) it was our first visit so we weren't sure what to expect, especially now in Covid times. On arrival we discovered that the car park was huge, the pay machines didn't work on that day👍 once we approached the entrance to the boat lift we were asked to leave details for NHS track and trace, the main outside area is open, plenty of picnic area and benches where you can sit and relax, the cafe is open too and sells refreshments to take away, toilets open inside only, there are lots of information posters about the boat lift with interesting facts. The boat lift itself is amazing and so quiet! For such a large machine I was surprised to hear no noise! It is a great experience to watch the canal boats being lifted up and down;) would love to be in the boat;) The play are for children is open. Once you have done exploring the boat lift you can go and visit dragonfly sanctuary or do a walk along the canal. We did both , it...
Read moreWe had a fabulous afternoon by the canal and river. We went on the boat trip that took us up the river to Northwich, then back to go up the lift. (Approx 1 hour trip.) You're not aware you're going up as it's such a smooth operation. You can't see much either as the sides are too big. But it's an amazing piece of engineering. The staff on board (Martin and Dave) are so knowledgeable of the local history that filled the journey with interesting snippets. The overall facilities of the boatlift and visiting centre are excellent. The cafe serves a variety of sandwiches and snacks. Our trip was at 13:30, which started on the river, so we made our way down the path to get the boat. Then it ended up on the upper canal, so we didn't have to climb back up the path. Everywhere only has gentle slopes, so it's not too bad anyway, but it is worth planning if you have medium to poor mobility. We had great weather too - I couldn't have planned a better day for messing about...
