A brilliant narrow gauge railway with steam and diesel locos. Starting at Fairbourne which has plenty of street, free and paid parking nearby is the principal station housing the museum, shop, cafe, model railway and Butterflies. Note there are no toilets on this site but there are some just over the road next to the car park. The staff we met were really friendly and chatty and helped to make the visit a great day out. Everything is on one level and they have an adapted coach which can take wheelchairs. The journey to the ferry terminus takes about 25 mins with a choice of open or roofed carriages. A great place for a family visit and is dog friendly. At the ferry terminus again there's a shop, cafe and toilets and you have the option to take the small ferry across to Barmouth (additional cost cash or card), stroll around the stony beach or just get the train back. I would give the railway 10 stars if I could but there's only 5 available on Google. Do go if your visiting this part of Wales.

Great little (big) railway, you start in Fairbourne Town centre (although you would not know it- so small), by the way toilets are just around corner, and probably cleanest ever seen. Then into the train cafe, good coffee, check out the model railway, its free, then onto your train (dinky sized, but carries loads), it's quite a journey to the ferry cafe terminal, but the journey, the view and the ride are mint. Not cheap £7 one way per adult, but really worth it, you can either go back on train and get mainline train to Barmouth or do like we did and get water ferry £2.50 each across, what a day.

After a long walk from Barmouth over the bridge, we stumbled on the miniature railway from Fairbourn to the ferry crossing. We a nice day but trip took less than 20min to reach the ferry station. We both thought it was quite expensive at £9 per adult and children travel for a £1 They sell hot drinks and small selection of snack foods again on the pricey side. Staff were very pleasant and gave a warm welcome

Had a great day using the railway. We started in Barmouth town and used the nice clean free toilets next to the marina. Then paid £4 each (cash or card) to get the ferry across the water to Barmouth Ferry station (which only took a few minutes)

The boat drops you off on the pebble beach and then it's a one minute walk to the station (which also had a nice toilet, hot drink vending machine and plenty of seating inside and outside)

When the steam train arrived the staff were very friendly and helpful and answered all my questions happily. You can pay them to get a ticket with cash, or if paying by card we were told to buy the ticket at the other end of the line (Fairbourne station)

The train ride to Fairbourne station took 30 mins and is very scenic. It's only 2 miles so you can walk on a lonely path next to the tracks, but the train experience is fun (and we were saving our legs for more walking)

The train stops at Fairbourne for 30 mins which was enough time to get a really good coffee at 'The Deli' a minute walk from the station and use the free public toilet in town (opposite the deli) We also purchased our train ticket at the station shop which also has a massive model railway/museum as well as lots of information about the Fairbourne Railway.

We got the train back up to Loop Holt station (make sure you tell the train staff if you want to get off at a station in the middle)

From Loop Holt we crossed the road and did the mist amazing scenic walk across to Morfa Mawddach station (also has nice few toilets) where we crossed the tracks and turned left to continue the amazing scenery walk back to Barmouth across the train bridge (which has a walking path next to the tracks)

We were very lucky with the weather and had the most amazing day of scenery with a relaxing train ride in-between great walking.

Highly recommend doing this, and we will definitely be back in future to repeat the day!

Note - To get to the boat from the marina you have to go down a few steep steps, and on the beach side you have to walk down a thin wooden plank to get off the boat (not an issue for us, but be aware if you have mobility issues or young children)

Note - At Fairbourne station there's also a main line station across the road. We parked at Barmouth to start our day but good to know you can do everything using public...

Nestled along the stunning coastline of Cardigan Bay, the Fairbourne Railway offers a delightful journey through picturesque landscapes and a glimpse into the golden age of steam railways. As a railway enthusiast and avid traveler, I recently had the pleasure of experiencing this historic gem.

From the moment I arrived at the quaint Fairbourne Station, I was captivated by the vintage charm exuding from every corner. The station itself is a testament to bygone days, adorned with classic signage and meticulously preserved locomotives that immediately transported me back in time.

One of the highlights of the journey was the stop at Barmouth Ferry, where passengers have the opportunity to disembark and explore the charming seaside village. Strolling along the promenade, indulging in local delicacies, and soaking up the laid-back atmosphere provided a welcome interlude before reboarding the train for the return journey.

Whether you're a railway enthusiast, a history buff, or simply someone seeking a unique way to explore the beauty of Wales' coastline, I wholeheartedly recommend embarking on this...

I was staying at the very laid back campsite almost directly across the road from the railway. We had already spent a few days in fairbourne and had seen the railway in action, promising ourselves that we would take a ride on it before the end of our trip. After a few walks to the beach and the very well stocked local post office, mini mart and the arcade and pubs further down towards the beach. We decided that we, rather than driving from fairbourne to Barmouth along the roads, we would catch the fairbourne train to the drop off point to the ferry in the mawddach estuary that in a few short minutes can take you to the archetypal seaside town of Barmouth. Filled with all sorts of seaside entertainment like beaches, arcades, watersports Zand gift shops to browse. Barmouth never fails to entertain. See my other reviews for Barmouth if you need more information. There are regular trains across Barmouth bridge back fairbourne from the main railway station in Barmouth near the funfair and beach. So you can easily return to fairbourne after using the ferry and the fairbourne...
