Flatford Mill is National Trust owned and a most unsurprisingly pleasant place to while away an afternoon it must be close to perfection . Parking is free for members and there is a small display nearby telling you all about the great man himself John Constable those closest to him and his life . A little further on you come to Bridge Cottage which I loved . It was home to the Clarke family who worked for and rented it from the miller . You have to tread very carefully in here and mind you head , luckily for me the place I rent has a low beamed roof to so I am used to it . This Cottage is great and very interesting strangely and I don't know why my favourite furnishing was a Spinning Wheel circa 1790 . It must have been quite cramped but looks most homely . A nice gift shop is next door and restaurant too . Flatford Mill and Willy Lotts Cottage are a bit further down the road . It is very serene every with lots of other visitors . The lock is on the other side of the River . There is lots going on around here for those more active than myself . Country walks are well sign posted and I believe you can go for a paddle up the river if you wish . I myself and others were fortunate enough to see a most beautiful Kingfisher as we were stood on the bank . Well this excited me anyway and was an added bonus . Have a nice...

Flatford is one of those Suffolk places that just seems to defy time, remaining in its own unspoilt tranquility. Despite having become one of the most visited places in both the county & the country, this area remains unspoilt by tourism, & maintains its own rural identity & sense of timelessness, associated for many with the masterworks by John Constable. Nonetheless, during the height of Summer & at weekends it can become so packed with sightseers it's only possible to glimpse such attractions as Flatford Mill, Valley Farm, Willy Lott's House, etc. So to enjoy all the quiet, traditional country features that Flatford offers visitors, it's best to consider the timing of a visit & to consider weekdays in Spring or Autumn. Even in Winter, however, it's worth the visit, (although such features as the RSPB Flatford Wildlife Garden are closed). At any time of year, after a spell of wet weather, be prepared for soggy ground or flooded pathways. All Flatford is low ground watermeadows, so rainfall soon becomes very muddy,...

Last Saturday, we took our son and his fiancé to visit Flatford Constable Country, and it was a delightful day out. It's easy to see why this beautiful landscape inspired John Constable; it feels like walking right into one of his famous paintings. We loved seeing Willy Lott's House and Flatford Mill in person—the setting for masterpieces like The Hay Wain and The White Horse. We enjoyed a peaceful stroll along the River Stour, taking in the tranquil scenery and soaking up the atmosphere. The paths are well-maintained, making for a lovely walk. We also stopped at the tearoom at Bridge Cottage for a refreshing break by the water. Overall, it's a fantastic day out for anyone who appreciates art, history, or a beautiful country walk. It was a wonderful way for our family to spend quality time together in a truly special place. We highly...

Very pretty countryside and architecture, with plenty of historical interest. Lots of parking available, free for National Trust members. From the parking area, a short walk down the path leads to a bridge that heads out to a walk alongside the river. Head left towards Flatford Mill and you can watch a short film about Constable in the first open building. Continuing, there's a beautiful old house - the day I visited in July there was an event taking place in the courtyard area with lots of live demonstrations and stalls. Beyond this is the iconic Willy Lott's Cottage, immortalised in Constable's Haywain, a picturesque, timeless scene. There are lovely walks around the surrounding countryside and the site is dog friendly. A small gift shop, café serving refreshments, and a pleasant wildlife garden are all a short walk from the parking area.
