The Holy Trinity Church Long Melford is a delightful place what a beautiful Church it kind of reminded me anyway of the one in Blythburgh . The Reredos was made in 1877 and is amazing made of Caen Stone and based on a painting of the Crucifixion by Albrecht Durer . There was also a great stained glass window depicting the Saints Felix , Alban and Erkanbald . Now being a major geek I could understand Felix and Alaban but Erkanbald kind of puzzled me being kind of sad I had heard of him . I know he was involved in the building of a Cathedral in Germany and I know that his remains have recently been found . But why does he appear in Long Melford ? Its a mystery to me and I am sure it shall remain so . I quite like to think that when I die someone might dedicated a window to me in Mainz but I doubt it . There are some very impressive tombs too most notably the one of Sir William Cordell . Very Nice . I think I may have solved my Erkanbald dilemma . It turns out there was an Erkanbald in Germany and an Erkenwald in England . Both were Bishops one of London and one of Mainz . All I can guess at is some kind of confusion between the two ? This may be wrong but is best I can arrive at . If perchance I receive some sort of Divine intervention and am told the true explanation I shall update you if I survive the shock .

A chance find while staying in Long Melford. We visited on a sunny Monday morning and on entry were met by two members of the congregation who gave us a brief overview of this lovely parish church. Constructed in the late 15th Century, likely from profits from Suffolk’s wool trade, and with an early 18th Century tower, Holy Trinity is impressive. It retains eight magnificent medieval stained glass windows, among them a tiny gem of colour showing three hares whose ears are intertwined to form, as some believe, a representation of the Trinity. There are wonderful marble and alabaster funerary monuments, an extraordinary assemblage of church brasses, and some lovely painted walls and ceilings. A prayer for the souls of the church builder, something not often found on the exterior of parish churches, is carved into a long band of stone under the eaves. A donation (tap and pay) is much appreciated, there is a small gift shop onsite, and apparently one can even arrange refreshments to precede or follow a tour (contact the events coordinator). Expect to spend at least an hour.

Such a stunning Church! Situated on top of a hill emphasises its impressive size. The architecture, history and heritage of the church is well worth taking in. Its so quiet and peaceful. Free to walk around but a donation is a respectful offering as it is run by volunteers. They have a little shop inside and there is a small parking area just down the lane a little, very easy to walk up to once parked. The Yew trees and old gravestones make the surrounding grounds atmospheric to walk through.
