There were three brothers who donated this area to Birmingham council in 1907.
Details are as follows: The Beacon Hill Toposcope, located in Lickey Hills Country Park near Birmingham, is a historical viewpoint offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
Origins and Cadbury Family Contribution
In 1907, Edward, George Jr., and Henry Cadbury donated Beacon Hill to the City of Birmingham to preserve the land for public use. To commemorate this gift, a toposcope—a circular marker indicating directions and distances to key landmarks—was placed on the hill.
Development and Enhancements
Originally, the toposcope was mounted on a simple circular platform. However, in 1988, to celebrate the centenary of Lickey Hills Country Park, the structure was refurbished and a small castle-like building was constructed to house the toposcope. This restoration was a joint effort involving:
The Manpower Services Commission
Birmingham City Council’s Department of Recreation and Community Services
The Cadbury family
Significance and Present Day
At 298 meters (978 feet) above sea level, Beacon Hill is one of the highest points in the West Midlands. Next to the toposcope is an Ordnance Survey triangulation pillar, highlighting the hill’s historical role in surveying and mapping.
Today, the Beacon Hill Toposcope stands as a symbol of conservation, public access, and the Cadbury family’s lasting impact on Birmingham’s green spaces. It remains a popular visitor attraction, providing breathtaking views of the city and beyond.

As one of the highest points for miles around was part of a historic network of beacons that would to signal the arrival of invading armies. It was used again during WWII by air raid wardens and the ROC to look out for enemy planes heading towards Birmingham and the nearby factories of Longbridge.
The land was once part of a royal Hunting Reserve in the stewardship of the Manor of Bromsgrove. It was sold to the Cadbury (chocolate) family in 1907 who then passed it over to the City of Birmingham.

There's a nice little walk through the woods, it runs alongside a road and golf course though, so it's not quiet or good to see nature. If people could take their litter home it would make it slightly better. The biggest down side was the number of dogs off lead. Shouldn't be allowed and ruins it for people with small kids or dogs that don't like having another 'playful' dog in its face! We left after 20 minutes because there were dozens of dogs...
