This is an excellent and marvellous on the banks of Lake Windermere with a variety of Fish and other animals to see. The Aquarium is over two floors and there are a variety of zones to see including The Americas, Asia, English Lake District, At the Seashore, Africa, The Rainforest and Underwater Tunnel with an array of fish to see both domestic and tropical fish to see and also other animals to see. The fish that be can be seen are Carp, Piranhas, Clownfish, Cichlids, Perch, Blind Cave Fish, Thornback Rays and Eurasian Minnows. The animals that can be seen are Poison Dart Frogs, Harvest Mice, Asian Short Clawed Otters, Leaf Cutter Ants & Standing Day Gecko along with Tufted Ducks and Mandarin Ducks all of which are well looked after in very spacious tanks etc and you can a great glimpse of both the fish and animals and all of them appear very inquisitive and intrigued upon the sight of Human Contact. There are very informative information displays at each of the tanks detailing information about them, their plight in the wild and also the conservation efforts to save them, which is a very interesting and enlightening read. The best of the displays are The Asian Short Clawed Otters due to their lovely playful nature, The Underwater Tunnel due to the fact you can see a brilliant array of different fish which behave in a very frenzied in an aquatic setting giving you a full idea of their environment in the wild and how the fish interact and behave with each other. The size of the attraction is not vast and should take approx. Just over an hour to get around. There are talks at two times throughout the day for the Otters where you an learn more intriguing facts about the Otters and how they in their wild environment, which is very enlightening. Prices are very reasonable with just over £9 for Adults and in the summer months visitors can enjoy some savings with a joint ticket to visit to the attraction in conjunction with visiting The Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway where the attraction is situated at the end of the line. The place is also right next to river cruises for Lake Windermere where from the attraction you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Picturesque scenery that surrounds the place. There is the 1872 Cafe which sells a nice range of food and drink at reasonable prices and also the Rockpool Gift Shop and The 1872 Gift shop sells a lovely range of souvenirs at reasonable prices. Overall this is a sensational and amazing place to visit which makes for a very pleasant and lovely day out. Well worth a visit whilst visiting...

Lakes Aquarium – A Wonderful Underwater Adventure for All Ages!

The Lakes Aquarium, located at Lakeside near Windermere, is a fantastic experience that combines learning, fun, and the natural beauty of aquatic life. It’s not a huge place, but it’s incredibly well-designed — offering a fascinating journey from local Lake District waters to exotic rivers and oceans around the world. The exhibits are engaging, informative, and perfect for both children and adults.

What makes the aquarium truly special is how it connects the story of Lake Windermere’s ecosystem with the wider world of marine life. You’ll find everything from local fish and otters to tropical species and turtles. The underwater tunnel is a real highlight — walking through it and seeing fish swimming gracefully all around you is a calming and magical experience.

The staff are knowledgeable, friendly, and clearly passionate about what they do. They take time to answer questions and ensure visitors have a memorable time. The aquarium also focuses on conservation and education, teaching visitors about the importance of protecting aquatic habitats, which adds real value to the visit.

There’s a lovely gift shop with nature-themed souvenirs, and the location is ideal — right next to the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway and Windermere Lake Cruises, making it easy to combine several great attractions in one day.

Whether you’re visiting with family, friends, or on your own, the Lakes Aquarium is a delightful stop — peaceful, educational, and full of wonder. A perfect way to experience the beauty of aquatic life in the heart of the Lake...

This was our first visit back after 18 years and we were slightly disappointed to find that the aquarium looked a bit tired and in need of a some maintenance in places. The tunnel that you walk through on the ground floor needs a good clean, (we saw a discarded plastic cup lid lodged in between some rocks), I realise that this comes down to visitors being more responsible with their waste, but staff should be more vigilant and spot this kind of thing. We bought our tickets in advance as it works out cheaper if you do, fairly straightforward process so quite easy to do this. The ticket prices are pretty reasonable, compared to some other aquariums and sealife centres, which is a bonus. The downstairs gift shop and cafe looked clean and had a good range of food available (including vegan options) at reasonable prices. The toilets were clean too and had a good supply of toilet paper and hand wash as well. There is no parking onsite, but there is a car park adjacent to the aquarium and is about 300 yards from it, so easy walking distance. We paid £5 for 10 hours just to make sure we had enough on our ticket. (This is relevant for September 2023, not sure if the car park charges will change in time to come.) One more thing I would like to add is that whilst most of the staff were friendly and pleasant to deal with, the lady that we met on our arrival at the ticket desk was far from welcoming and was rather abrupt. I understand that people may not always be in the best of moods for a variety of reasons, but surely if one is working in a customer facing role, a smile or a hello isn't too much to ask??
