This is a beautiful place to visit, and far bigger than I anticipated, I bought 3 adult tickets and 1 carer (as I am disabled)for the gardens and the house. Inside the house was beautiful and the art work was amazing , the negative however was that there wasn’t many plaques or pieces explaining about the art work , there was an option to buy a guide book at Β£7.00 or a audible digital version (which I didn’t purchase) both I presume gives you the information needed to truly appreciate the art, I didn’t know this at the time of buying the tickets and to be honest for the price of both gardens and house for a family of four I still wouldn’t have bought it because I assumed all of the information would be available to you, there are staff in every room available for you to ask questions about the work but this really wasn’t useful as they were busy with others and half way through an explanation by the time you join them so you have no idea which piece or what they are speaking about! I believe that all that is needed is a brief summary at the side or under each art work, there are some but maybe a handful around the whole house. If you want to spend time in the house understanding each piece I strongly suggest you buy a guide book or the digital alternative but I believe the information about the artwork should be included in the price of admission and so I felt disappointed and I didn’t get the full experience. The house is accessible with no steps and lifts are available but the lift is very old and very small, only just enough room for a wheelchair and carer, probably too small for a wheelchair, carer and a child. The gardens looked beautiful but absolutely vast!!! Therefore I understood why there are separate charges for the house and the gardens, BUT it is far too big to walk around as a disabled person or as a carer with a wheelchair, in fact I believe that even very fit able bodied persons would struggle to walk the house and then the gardens!!! There is a little train available to take you around the grounds but again you have to pay extra for this which I believe should be included in the entry price. Also I would recommend people to consider the time it would take to walk the house and the grounds, this would easily take a full day without the travel there and back. I have given 2 stars because we walked the house and then went into the gardens, but as soon as we entered and saw the huge path disappearing into view we wouldn’t be able to go further due to time and physical restrictions, therefore we paid for the gardens and only used the loos at the very beginning and had to leave very disappointed. I believe the cost of the gardens should be included in the charge of the house because it is far too large to enjoy both in one visit especially if you’re a little slower or disabled with a wheelchair chair/carer. Overall this is a beautiful place to visit and a nice day out but I think it is too expensive especially with the add ons which I believe you need to fully appreciate the experience as these should be provided for free. Also I don’t believe the house is a place to visit with young children, the grounds maybe ok for kids if they’re happy...

Beautiful grounds with lovely facilities. A great day out. We visited Chatsworth as a large family. We were travelling in from Lancashire, Yorkshire, and the Midlands, we all had an approximately 1.5 hour drive to get there, which was quite manageable, even with younger kids. We bought the Β£10 carpark ticket at the booth and headed in. The carpark area is enormous but was a bit confusing. As the family had all travelled up in separate cars and got there at different times, some of the family had parked in one carpark but by the time we got there, about half an hour later, that carpark was blocked off and we were directed to park much further away. Eventually, with a few minutes of driving around and going back and forth, we managed to get into the same carpark as the rest of the family. This was much easier for us when we were setting up our picnic food and equipment. We found a nice little spot next to the river, which overlooked the vast greenery, where sheep and beautiful little lambs were grazing. We also viewed multiple ducks and tiny ducklings swimming across the river and occasionally climbing up the embankment to visit us! After lunch, we stopped for a quick bathroom break before heading out onto one of the nature walks. Toilets were ok. They're weren't kept the cleanest, but they served the purpose. The nature walk was beautiful and peaceful. We opted for the more adventurous walk instead of the pushchair friendly version. We got to climb up and duck under and squeeze through spaces. It was great fun and even the kids thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a little steep to begin with, and if you're as unfit as me, then you'll definitely feel it in your chest and your legs!! The walk is clearly signposted with blue arrows on small small boards Wear good, comfortable shoes with a good grip as there are many slippy spots, especially if there has been rain in that week. On completing the walk, we let the kids all get an icecream - they definitely deserved it! There's a cute little courtyard with an icecream shop, coffee shop, cafe, gift shop etc. By the way, the icecreams were super creamy and delicious and the lady who served was very friendly. We then headed back towards the cars, we set up the picnic area again for drinks and snacks and played ball games with the children. The website does say the carpark closes at 6pm and many cars had left by then however, the kids (and adults) were having so much fun we stayed on until about 7pm. No one asked us to leave, and there were still groups of people still there after we had left. I'm not sure if the website closing time meant no entry to the carpark after 6pm or maybe they're just not too bothered about people leaving later? All in all, we all had the most amazing day out. The weather was warm and mainly sunny with a couple of very short drizzles. The hour and half drive back home (my husband drove, not me) was spent looking back through photos of the day and texting each other of when we were arranging the next trip...
