An interesting area of the Peak District, with dramatic rock formations providing opportunities for climbing and sightseeing, and history close by. Good views over the surrounding countryside on a clear day. At the foot of Cratcliffe is the Hermit's Cave, a small cave protected behind railings, notable for a well preserved carving of the crucifixion which may date back to the 1500s. Accessing the rocks and cave involves negotiating some moderately steep and narrow paths on loose ground, so requires a bit of care. The wooded setting means the cave's location isn't immediately obvious. There's a small layby at the side of the nearby road providing free parking for a few vehicles. No other facilities mean it hasn't become a major tourist destination. While visiting, don't miss Robin Hood's Stride or Nine Stones Close stone circle, both located in the same area above the trees.

Cracking views when you get to the top. No climbing need to reach the top but I suppose the more adventurous could do some scrambling to make the visit more, ahem, exciting. We are not of that type so we just followed the well worn path and reached the top with ease. It’s a short walk from Robin Hoods view, so both the same day is very easy. Not to far from a couple of villages with good pubs. Not too busy when we visited, so ideal for good people free photo opportunities. Like I said above, a well worn path takes you safely up. On a clear day like we had you can see for miles.

I was compelled to revisit Cratcliffe following a 35 year gap. Back in the day it was a fabulous and rather tough trad climbing crag, boasting some of the longest and hardest routes in the Grit Peak. Fascinating to scramble around the bottom of the rock faces and remember the imposing challenges .

Really enchanting for a sunrise experience. I highly recommend waking up a little earlier than usual -- you'll have the whole place to yourself (and the dew on the meadow walk up will make you feel like you're in a fairytale).

Its only a 15-20 minute walk up to the top of the cliffs from the carpark. Make sure that you go left at the top of the hill to avoid entering someone's...
