Heavenly
I have only explored the path along Burbage Brook, but you can find pictures of the rest of the gorge on the internet
I got off the train at Grindleford, and within a few minutes was by the stream. It gets better and better as you go uphill. The brookside path isn’t an easy one. A little bit of scrambling, a little detour on occasions, muddy, steep and more. But it is gloriously gorgeous. if Lord of the Rings was filmed in the UK, you could fully imagine it being filmed here.
The trees are twisty as they rise into the canopy above you, and the brook burbles and falls beneath you. You can hear the rushing of water through small rapids. If you like long exposure photography, you will love it here
Even if you can only stay here for a short time, make sure to make it up to the wooden bridge. It’s a picture postcard pretty place
Definitely a place you need good footwear, and boots are probably best. I often spent time jumping up rocks, or one foot on the bank and another balancing on a rock in the water.
Froggat Edge is about 30 minutes away by hiking uphill, and you can find your way to the River Derwent, to walk back up to Hathersage. Or keep going north to get to Higger Tor. Because of the proximity of the train station, Padley Gorge is a great place to...
Read moreThis is a great walk for families, plenty to see and do, at the start of the walk there's an ice-cream van which is always a bonus if it's warm enough, we generally don't get one until we've been on the walk, if your wanting an easy walk then head over the bridge and turn left, then just follow the trail at the side of the gorge untill you reach the bottom of the trail which should be grindlewood Station, they have a cafe there and toilets, just past there is abit of a steep incline but not for long then just head back towards where you started, the reason i gave it 4 star's is that nobody ever tells you to carry on past the national trust carpark where they charge £5 pounds in cash only for 4 hours parking, but you can park free near to the ice-cream van at the side of the road or in the station cafe carpark for £2 pounds for the day, the national Trust area does have a nice cafe and free clean toilets but you can still walk that way if you like by crossing the road where the ice-cream van sits and save yourself money on there carpark, it's definitely worth a day out if you haven't been before, you won't be disappointed, only other downside is it's no good for wheelchair...
Read moreAbsolutely loved it, it was so serene. You do gradually climb up the Gorge from the water below. Lots of muddy paths so wear comfortable shoes with grip. Also please be careful as lots of fallen trees.
I went on a Fri at around 13:00. Parking was not an issue, plenty of spaces at Grindleford Station (although peak summer holidays might get busy) . £2.40 for a full day (includes charges), make sure you have the Ringgo app downloaded as that's the only way to Pay (if mobile signal is an issue, ask the cafe to use the guest WiFi, although I had no problems).
If the walk is challenging, you can always park on the side of the road (Ice cream van on Google) on B6521. There is easy access to the top path of the Gorge and a nice short walk to Owler Tor. A nice place for a picnic.
Grindleford Station Cafe is a nice place to stop for a quick snack, plus toilets are available but only for customers. Doesn't hurt to support local businesses. No card payment, it's cash only.
Sadly despite there being signs, not a single dog was on a leash plus there was rubbish left behind in places. Dispose of your rubbish...
