It's a nice place for a walk and or your pet dog " keep your dog on the leash it might scare the wildlife" and interaction with nature. Can be very cold during the winter months, but just rap up well . Generally a very tranquil quiet place it can be busy but that's in the summer months, winter time hardly any one around. There is a caffe come museum with amenities. And past industrial archeology to look at, were you can see the beginning of the industrial revolution. You will also see post industrial buildings archeology leftover from the beginning of the industrial revolution, most of the industrial sites generally have a notice board explaining the sight that your looking at and what was going on during the building...

What an absolutely beautiful place to walk and be in nature. Stunning views, lots of history and the longest canal tunnel in Britain (I think). I didn't go in the tunnel today because it is seriously long, but I very much enjoyed walking round the nature reserve and canals above ground.
There were a serious amount of ladybirds everywhere today, and I imagine it's pretty good for beetles in general and butterflies once it warms up a bit.
It's free entry. There is a free car park (Windmill end car park) and it was empty first thing on a Saturday...
Read moreBeen a few times but not for a while. It is a little oasis in the middle of a suburban area. Canal side walks, swans, geese, ducks, herons and barges and even a bat! It is an old mining area and has a listed building there. Also fishing pools too. You can walk through the Netherton tunnel which is about 1.75 miles long. Have never done it but plan to next time we visit but will take a torch and my wellies! Lovely place to spend a few hours with the dog or the family with a picnic. There is a small visitor centre but not sure of the opening times but can get a cuppa...
