A delightful museum with an enormous amount of information packed into a small space.. A timeline around the walls of the ground floor showed Dunwich's rise from a coastal settlement to its peak as a prosperous trading port and fall through the centuries in the losing battle against the sea to its present day status as a picturesque tourist attraction. The museum staff are enthusiastic and committed to their role. I was lucky to chat with the chairman of the museum trustees (I think) who was a fount of knowledge about Dunwich and its history. On the first floor there was a chance to watch a short film about the once town/city, now village and listen to an old man (not real) tell tales of the busy smuggling trade of times gone by. Read moreLovely tiny museum... excellent use of gallery space. Excellent visuals excellently exploring the history of Dunwich and the surrounding area...showing how much of the area has been lost to the sea. It's incredible.
Maps, photographs, visuals and a gorgeous interactive tiny smugglers shed which comes to life when you walk in...
Great place to bring your children, lovely low level display areas, (bigger museums should learn from this place). Hands on display areas, fabulously furnished, lots for young at heart to explore and learn. Friendly gallery lady offering information too.
Dressing up in costumes and other opportunities to touch and feel and play, obviously have had to change due to Covid restrictions, but none the less, there are brilliant informative learning stations. A tiny shop too, with books and gifts.
I could see evidence that in regular times, they offer family activities... I'm sure those will be happening again soon in the future.
Highly recommended ✨ Oh yes .....

I checked the opening times and these showed it being open until 4:30 pm. When I got there at about 3 pm it was closed, with no further information. I appreciate that the museum is probably staffed by volunteers, but it would be useful to have a more detailed list of days and times of opening, and an online booking system available. albeit a shorter list of days and times when open. Another suggestion is to have an online booking...
