Surprising to read the Old reviews.. Yes , it's not a castle (strictly speaking) but part of a manorial complex. The structure itself is a rare find with a tower of significant importance. Was nice to spot it off the Pickering road and easy to park up and walk across the field to have a look. In a way, it's nice these old structures are left to be stumbled on... Standing , reflecting in the sunshine and admiring the views... Pleasant place to take a stroll...
Read moreAccess was easy, via a farm track and on marked footpaths, through a herd of expectant and curious cows. Drivers can park nearby by the Old mill in West Ayton. The building remains are inaccessible due to being very derelict and gated, but you still get a good indication of the more northern style of fortification used to repel the Reavers of the time.
