Surprising to read the Old reviews.. Yes , it's not a castle (strictly speaking) but part of a manorial complex. The structure itself is a rare find with a tower of significant importance. Was nice to spot it off the Pickering road and easy to park up and walk across the field to have a look. In a way, it's nice these old structures are left to be stumbled on... Standing , reflecting in the sunshine and admiring the views... Pleasant place to take a stroll with the dog.

Access was easy, via a farm track and on marked footpaths, through a herd of expectant and curious cows. Drivers can park nearby by the Old mill in West Ayton. The building remains are inaccessible due to being very derelict and gated, but you still get a good indication of the more northern style of fortification used to repel the Reavers of the time. Very photogenic in good sunlight from the front.

It was nice to visit not under any trust so was free to wander around. No access but you could see some of the interior . Not much left standing but still impressive. There has been some repair. Local stone weathers well. We had parked up at forge valley and walked back to Ayton through the gate stay right.

Simple remains of a medieval fort/castle, a few good descriptions of the history on plaques. Nice walk which leads to a nice walk by the river. Bear in mind there's a few trees down across the path which is a boarded track but overgrown ..no good for pushchairs. Turned back after 1 mile as we didn't know where we were. But nice on a...
