First impressions count. On the look out to sign up to a new gym and decided to visit this leisure centre as it is conveniently located near home. Walked in and spoke to a lady called Jill at the front desk. I walked in smiled and said good morning (as you do) but was greeted with a blank stare and no response. I then proceeded to ask how she was doing and if she was ok. Her response was “yh”. I straight away felt unwelcome for whatever reason. Initially I was interested in the “day pass” allowing you to use the gym for 1 day as advertised on the website. As fitness is an important investment for me and I would not want to sign up to a gym membership and regretting it down the line. However I was first told that this is not possible and one could only “see” the gym before joining a monthly membership. To which see said most people don’t come at 6am in the morning to try the gym and she wouldn’t be able to show me around anyway as she would need to have another member of staff with her. Upon Jill showing me a list of membership prices and responding to my questions. She eventually asked if I wanted to see the gym. Where she asked another member of staff to show me the gym. This gentleman was OK. Seemed to be apart of the swim staff so he asked another lady working in the gym section to show me around who probably gave me the best experience as she came across as more polite and enthusiastic. Based on my experience/first impression with the staff I would not sign up with this gym. Also being a weightlifting enthusiast, wouldn’t recommend this leisure centre. As the range of weight lifting equipment in comparison to other places is sparse. If you are in to swimming and classes then this maybe for you. However for a little more and slightly further out like Bedford or MK (Fitness First, DL) you can get a much better customer experience and access to a higher quality gym/leisure centre in every department. A no brainier for me. If you can compromise on quality of facilities and staff for convenience than this...
Read moreBeen a regular for a few years. Last week a customer 'had an accident' which closed the big pool. The staff were all young and seemed too shy to take control of the situation so people were unsure what was going on or what to do. Many moved to the training pool, which it was discovered had also fallen victim to the 'accident'. A customer was trying to get the attention of staff as there was a large amount of sloppy poo floating around in the pool and all over the side of the pool. It took way too long to get any attention which is frightening, if they cant see someone waving their hands in the air how would they notice a drowning child?
People were asked to get out but without being directed away from the poo they were literally walking through it unaware. The whole place was closed down for about 15 minutes and then reopened. There is no way on earth they could have properly cleaned all that mess away, and no one at all thought to clean the floors in the shower area or changing rooms, where multiple people had gone after stepping in the poo.
After the reopening, I overheard two lads (staff) saying how they still hadn't finished cleaning and were heading in to do it. A bit late seeing as it was full of people again.
Very little communication, no apologies, no offers of refunds considering my family were only in the pool for 5 minutes.
As others have said, no one enforces the rule about footwear in the changing rooms and they're usually dirty anyway. So after this hashed up poo incident I think I'm going to stay away permanently.
UPDATE:
Tried again to come here. Refused as they're full. Even though there's hardly anyone in the pool. But now you have to book in advance and give them all your details. Why is everywhere like this now? Needless to say we didn't swim and definitely won't give the cess pit a...

Where do I start? This gym is worse than any gym I have been to, in comparison to gyms in 2 of the UK's supposed worst towns - Luton and Birmingham.
Dirty often. Clumps of mess under machines like the stairmasters. Showers and men's changing room smells and is often dirty. Hot water doesn't come out the showers and there's no sign up to say so. I've had a brain injury so these sort of things really really make me angry. JUST LEAVE A Sign. I take my contact lenses out, to have a shower and am virutally blind once I do. Naked and jump in the shower to find not an ounce of hot water coming out.
Just the basics of having working suitable hand-wash dispensers seems an issue in this gym. Theres either no soap in the dispenser or the dispenser in completely broken/not there. People go and take dumps and don't even wash there hands then go train and touch up the equipment. Is it that hard. Go and buy some from tesco if it is and just leave it next to the sink!
The staff that sit in that little office outside the training hall above the staircase are a bunch of see you next Tuesdays. Pretend to busy on the phone when you go in there. Go and do some work and clean the gym.
Ampthill is cryinggg out for a new premium gym. Wake up. The only gym for all these villages is flitwick leisure centre which is a shambles. Piccadilly circus with loads of kids everywhere hogging the equipment/ on the phones and chatting away.
So much land. Should be majorly refurbed and extended. Ampthill needs a new premium gym. It's an affluent Borough but really needs to open up and expand just like Solihull in the...
