Kirkleatham Museum is the very definition of society. A free museum that is professional, educational and entertaining all at the same time.
We went to see the monolith exhibition in March 2023 but instead was totally wowed by the steel exhibition which portrayed the birth of Middlesbrough and the wider North East along with the demise of the steel industry. It is mesmerising and so absorbing.
And, of course, there is so much more to see. The Saxon Princess, 50s tech, tapestries and on and in.
I was even impressed with the gift shop and I normally avoid such junk.
It has a well equipped play area for kids and a cafe, although I haven't had opportunity to try that yet.
And it was all free. Understandably, donations are very welcome and I encourage anyone to help where they can, as to keep such a place free at source for families is a pride to the area.
It has also got the owl and bird area, which is paid entry, woods on its doorsteps and a great picnic area for nicer weather.

Read moreIt's free, museum, car park, fabulous play park area and picnic place. Lots of exhibits and interesting to get to know about ironstone mining, industry and local history, as well as up to date life in general. Hands on activities too for all ages. A good 3 - 4 hour was spent here on this sunny day visit, visiting all areas. Fantastic cafe offering teas/coffees/meals/divine cakes/cookies. Reasonably priced. Worth a trip out if you have children in the holidays to keep happy & occupied in your sight. Though further adult only visits would need to be taken again, as we all know with children, you have to move on quickly in some areas, as boredom sets in! Picnics essential & plenty of water to save on drinks costs, as running around is thirsty weather in the park. Think I did observe some chilled cider however in the fridges behind the cafe counter, so maybe has a licence to serve alcohol as well. Enjoyable...
Read moreWe took our Granddaugher here for a little run out. There was plenty of free parking and the place was spotless. The play park was a little muddy, as we had loads of rain lately, this is probably expected. Our granddaughter loved the park, especially the musical bits and pieces. The museum is a little dissapointing, although free, there isn't a great deal in there. It has a fair bit of the steel industry herritage, which is what we expected, but it's just not very interesting. It's probably a work in progress, theres lots of rooms with very little in. The cafe was nice and clean, well staffed and some decent choices, but was rather expensive. The chips were £4, they came in a small tin. There was a steak sandwich , which was £11.00. The Brownie was almost inedible, it was like biting into concrete. Over priced and not edible. We plan to go again, but probably go to the play park and visit...
