Although the owls and other birds were lovely, I was disappointed to see that rabbits, guinea pigs and chickens were all living together in one large, dirty enclosure, which is quite wrong. They all carry different bacteria which can cause all sorts of respiratory and other health problems for each other, for a start, and they all have different nutritional requirements from each other, which is the main point. The one shared water bowl was disgustingly filthy although I was assured it was changed regularly, and there was barely any hay (which was also dirty) which rabbits need an awful lot of (their body size per day, in fact). Rabbits and guinea pigs need toys for stimulation and there wasn't one toy in the enclosure and the rabbits were simply lying down, bored. Keeping these animals together like this would suggest to members of the public that it would be alright for them to do so back home - it is so not. I would suggest therefore that the Owl Centre separates these 3 categories of animals into their own pens as swiftly as possible. The other cages were a bit small too for some of the larger birds and the place as a whole was a bit smelly which indicates it wasn't kept very clean. Not sure what they spend the entrance fee on but they need to use it to spruce it up a bit. I will not...
Read moreBrilliant time at the Owl Centre today in what started off quite bleak and windy. Best £9.50 we've spent all week and brought a smile to our 14 year olds face for the first time in two days! Excellent value for money. Small but well laid out centre with plenty of birds and small animals to see. We were able to feed the guinea pigs, chickens, rabbits etc. Even the emu's weren't too intimidating or scary! Spent a good hour initially browsing round as well as meeting Elmo the Barn Own at 12 o'clock. Went for something to eat/drink and were able to get our hands stamped to come and go as we pleased. Came back for another trip round and to see the flying display at 2.30pm. I think the display, which consisted of Atlas the Owl, Wally the Kookaburra, 3 cheeky vultures and two Kites, didn't particularly go as well as the bird keeper wanted, but we definitely had a great time and it added a comical aspect to the display. We had a noise competition between Wally and another bird or two. There was plenty of interesting knowledge also shared. All areas of the centre were clean and the birds/animals looked well cared for with good enclosures. Fantastic little place that's well worth a visit. Dedicated friendly staff. We are sure the 3 vultures won't be grounded for too long for breaking the...
Read moreFirst visit this weekend and what a great place to go. The Owl Centre is within the Kirkleatham complex, there is loads to do that’s of little cost. The Owl Centre cas £3.50 per adult and our baby Granddaughter was free. It is small and very compact, but for little kids, it means there’s no walking without seeing something new. Although it’s called the Owl Centre, there is loads of other animals to see. It really is a great place to go. The place itself was litter free, no bad smells, pushchair friendly (also wheelchair). There’s a little gift shop, and donation boxes dotted about, shame there isn’t a gift aid on the entry price, however I do have a pet hate where it costs more to gift aid. But that’s not for here. All in all, we enjoyed our visit. We’d definitely go again. The other places in the complex are worth having a look at. The Walled Garden has a great Cafe, but we thought it was rather expensive to go in the actual Garden. The other Cafe near the museum when we went was terrible. Poor quality food , and not very generous servings, and it wasn’t cheap...
