(ad) Summer of Play at Gibside What a place to spend quality time as a family ā™„ļø Four legged friends on leads are welcome in most areas too & there is plenty of dog water available. There are so many activities included daily across the holidays as part of a summer of play including dedicated activities such as a puppet theatre for little ones in the walled garden. Make sure you pick up a Summer of Play map on arrival so you don't miss any of the play locations. We loved the Play Labyrinth where the whole family can get involved in activities including hobby horse races, rocket throwing, sack races, marble runs, badminton, music making, chalk drawing and more. It's a great opportunity to let loose and get a little silly (or competitive depending on your family šŸ˜‚). Afterwards you can head to the Strawberry Castle Playground which is fantastic with zip wires, climbing frames, a play castle, swings plus a water play area and sand pit. There's a drinks/ice cream kiosk and loos here too. For lunch we tried the Gibside Pizza Pit for the first time and loved it. Really flavoursome pizzas and good service too. You could spend a full day at the Play Labyrinth and Playground but if you're keen to extend your adventure, don't miss the low ropes course, den building zone, sculpture trail, trim trail and Gibside's fantastic scenic walking routes. PLUS there are additional activities on selected days including nature crafts, storytelling, music & SEND Smile through Sport. See Gibside's website for what's on when.

Gibside’s Summer of Play was brilliant — space hoppers, penalty shootout, volleyball, and even a staffed family sports day including egg and spoon races, bean bag relays and rocket javelin! The permanent Strawberry Castle playground had zip wires, swings, and toad stool climbing frames - a good size adventure playground for >8 year olds. A Family Ticket cost us Ā£46.80 which is ok but the Summer of Play made is good value as we spent at least 2-3 hours entertained by all the extra activities. Loved the recycled ping pong tables and smaller playground by the cafĆ© whilst we had a minute to eat our sandwiches. The walled garden was gorgeous with apple trees, mint, flowers, and even snuck in some blackberry picking. We played the sensory musical instruments and loved a giant game of giant snakes and ladders too!

We were in a group of 7 consisting of 4 adults and 3 children. The children liked the play area and the different games they could play in the garden area. It was a lovely day which certainly helped. We had a nice walk around the grounds checking out the Chapel and stables where you can get refreshments. Near the main entrance they serve hot food and pizzas. As we are National Trust members their was no entry charge which is just as well because a small sausage roll would cost you £4.75.

I live in Newcastle and have been coming to Gibside for years as a child. However, when it became National Trust I seemed to forget about it. And to be honest it’s quite expensive if you don’t have a membership. First off there’s a large car park with a few minutes walk to the entrance. Once you’ve pays it shown your membership card, there’s a steep walk up a bank to the start of several trails. You can get a map to help but it’s colour coded on levels of accessibility and time so it’s easy to follow without a map. We opted to do the pink trail which takes you to several key locations including the Orangery, the stables, Chapel etc. all of which are ruins and lovely to see. Parts of the pink trail were reasonable steep inclines and I wish we had bought water from the cafe at the start of the walk! We enjoyed the art studios at the stables and watched one lady ā€˜Katherine’ peacefully painting and chatting to us about art. She was lovely. The chapel was as I remembered it from 40 odd years ago except back then, sheep roamed the oak lined pasture. Overall it was a lovely afternoon. Next time we will grab a bite to eat...

Great place for a walk, lots of fun activities for kids during holidays and weekends. So close to Newcastle and Gateshead, a great opportunity to get out and about in nature with frequent sightings of wildlife such as deer and red kite putting the icing on the cake.

UPDATE: I've been visiting Gibside frequently as an NT member for over 12 years now. Recently I've found that the maintenance seems to be lacking a bit, paths are becoming eroded and dangerous in places, on my last visit I tripped due to the uneven surface near the stables. I was unable to use a dog waste bin due to it being full (stuffed with paper cups). Wildlife sightings also appear to be less frequent in my experience.

I'm starting to wonder if Gibside is becoming a victim of its own success due to so many people visiting overwhelming the facilities provided. While all the money being spent on artwork and kids activities are drawing plenty of paying visitors in, the basics such as maintenance of paths and provision of waste disposal have not been maintained to a high enough standard and, where necessary, upgraded to cope with the greater number...
