Read moreI live in Newcastle and have been coming to Gibside for years as a child. However, when it became National Trust I seemed to forget about it. And to be honest it’s quite expensive if you don’t have a membership. First off there’s a large car park with a few minutes walk to the entrance. Once you’ve pays it shown your membership card, there’s a steep walk up a bank to the start of several trails. You can get a map to help but it’s colour coded on levels of accessibility and time so it’s easy to follow without a map. We opted to do the pink trail which takes you to several key locations including the Orangery, the stables, Chapel etc. all of which are ruins and lovely to see. Parts of the pink trail were reasonable steep inclines and I wish we had bought water from the cafe at the start of the walk! We enjoyed the art studios at the stables and watched one lady ‘Katherine’ peacefully painting and chatting to us about art. She was lovely. The chapel was as I remembered it from 40 odd years ago except back then, sheep roamed the oak lined pasture. Overall it was a lovely afternoon. Next time we will grab a bite to eat...
Read moreGreat place for a walk, lots of fun activities for kids during holidays and weekends. So close to Newcastle and Gateshead, a great opportunity to get out and about in nature with frequent sightings of wildlife such as deer and red kite putting the icing on the cake.
UPDATE: I've been visiting Gibside frequently as an NT member for over 12 years now. Recently I've found that the maintenance seems to be lacking a bit, paths are becoming eroded and dangerous in places, on my last visit I tripped due to the uneven surface near the stables. I was unable to use a dog waste bin due to it being full (stuffed with paper cups). Wildlife sightings also appear to be less frequent in my experience.
I'm starting to wonder if Gibside is becoming a victim of its own success due to so many people visiting overwhelming the facilities provided. While all the money being spent on artwork and kids activities are drawing plenty of paying visitors in, the basics such as maintenance of paths and provision of waste disposal have not been maintained to a high enough standard and, where necessary, upgraded to cope with the greater number...
