We had a couple of hours to kill and Fort Paull was nearby so thought we'd have a wander around. The staff seem helpful and informative, particularly the lady whom we paid our entry fee too. She gave us a rundown of what was where, and gave us a map of the site. The exhibits are a main part of the attraction, along with the actual fort itself, and although they were great to look around, I was a bit disappointed to find that they were thick with dust and cobwebs inside. It gave the impression of neglect, although I'm sure that's not the case. There were lots of rooms and areas, depicting various times in history that the fort was used and for one thing or another, and it was nice pottering about with no particular rush. It was a lovely sunny day when we went, but I imagine it'd be a fab place to come on a rainy day too as there are loads of indoor things to see. The children's play area was great fun, and the obstacle course a brilliant idea. Very in keeping with the military theme. I was a little concerned about a few jagged nails here and there on the course, so be advised to keep an eye on little ones. There is a cafe on site, but I didn't get a chance to go in as we were on a flying visit. The loos were functional but tired looking with several big spiders eyeballing me from their dusty webs whilst I did my ablutions. The gift shop was well stocked with all kinds of relevant historical things, books, toys etc but I was a bit disappointed that it smelled really strongly of stale smoke. Maybe the smoking area was a little too close to the door? Overall, really enjoyed the visit and will be going back this year to spend longer there. Well worth a visit as there is plenty...
Read moreAfter having visited recently, there was an occurrence that happened onsite that was dealt with incredibly poorly.
My family and I were so looking forward to this day and it was completely tarnished by the occurrence and the way it was dealt with by staff onsite.
I was willing to put up with it at the time but the toilets are disgusting. No hot water and dirty.
For somewhere that serves food, I'd be interested to know more about hygiene ratings.
Stairs going down to various areas were incredibly slippery and dangerous due to the rain. There were ropes to hold onto when going up and down stairs but the look of them didn't give me much reassurance that they'd remain secure if I fell and relied on them to 'save me.
A lot of the areas were in major need of restoration, with various displays falling apart.
Edit: From the response I have had, it continues to demonstrate the unprofessional nature of this business. The toilets weren't in a disgusting state due to mud. There were toilets in the form of portable toilets that had no water whatsoever. They also didn't have any disinfectant to flush the toilets with and so the stench was repulsive. The cabin wasn't in a much better state.
The business and its hygiene shouldn't fall apart the moment there is a bit of rain. Lets not call it a storm, it was light rain at the time that I experienced these toilets.
I gave it a few days before leaving this review as the previously mentioned 'occurrence' was ongoing and I was hoping that it would be resolved more amicably...
Read moreInteresting place, more 1960's in exhibt presentation, non-the-less interesting.
Price - fine, see photo
Smell - rooms and tunnels smelt damp, mothballs and fusty, I was not able to stay in.
Accessibility - not really, steps up to the ramparts to view the Humber and mainly steps down into the tunnels. Ramps for the West Berlin Carriage and the Blackburn Beverly Plane, however access was narrow and the boarding very spongey, I would not want take a wheelchair up either and trust not to fall through or skin knuckles (for those self propelling) getting onto the ramps through the narrow openings. Otherwise, large grass area and paths to wander around.
Ramparts - some views of the Humber, but trees are overgrown and block many of the views
Toilets - fine, the cubicles need to be a little cleaner. I tried the disabled loo and the outward opening door was heavy to open.
Children - grassed adventure play area, nothing interactive.
Website - I asked where the tearooms were as mentioned on the Website and was told 'Oh, they went three years ago'.
Food - 'The Bar' basic menu, nice, but nothing for veggies. I had chips (cooked in oil in its own dedicated pan), I could have had an egg, one of my my friends did and the staff went outside to collect it from their own hens. The Bar Staff, very nice and helpful.
Car Park - free and plenty of space and reasonably accessible
Visiting - I think take your pick, my second time there, but would go back if a visitor...
