We decided on having a day out and visiting somewhere unique and imaginative, and the Hawkstone Follies fitted into that mould. Leaving the A49 north of Shrewsbury, we drove along a quiet lane through an ornate little village before arriving at the sign for our visit. From the carpark, we had quite a climb to the reception area. From here and with a guide map, a must, we walked along a lane until we saw the sign for the Follies Walk. What a magical experience laid in front of us we could not have imagined. Climbing through the trees, following the Hawkstone Trail signs, we felt we were being transported back in time while appearing in a movie. We soon came across strange looking trees and trolls. Eventually, we arrived at a large brick hexagon building, occupied by two men and cannons. On a clear day and without the leaves, the views would be spectacular across the valley. From here, we walked further into the woods, eventually arriving at the statue of Sir Richmond Hill. By now, rain was falling, so we decided to climb the monument to the top and found a dry spot to admire the view. Unfortunately, we could not see too far but allowed our imagination to run away with us. On the return journey down, my wife counted 150 steps clockwise. Out into the rain and off along the trail. This next part of our journey would require the use of a torch to navigate the numerous tunnels we needed to pass through, along the trail. Walking through the tunnels, which had been carved out of the rocks, we were brought into another magical scenario. We seemed to come across something magical at every turn. I don't want to spoil this magical place by saying too much more, other than you need to experience it yourself. The people we met walking around felt like we did in a magical time. We continued walking and finally, having now dried out, arrived back at a junction where we started from, then onto the visitor centre for tea and cake. Essential after such an experience!! I have mentioned the Follies having a magical feel, well, it turns out the film Narnia was filmed here and if you visit the gallery, you will see some photos from the film. We will return to visit the other magical areas. I hope your families feel the magic...

Great day out. Good walking shoes needed. There are some challenging paths for those not used to walking, but there is so much to see there plenty of reasons to go it slow and stop and explore. Could easily spend a...
