Great for getting up close to steam engines and for children (and adults) to see things that they don't normally see. There is a vintage Royal Saloon kitted out with artifacts of the period and a travelling post office where you can sort and file letters in the way they used to be. Always has activities laid on for kids during school holidays. There are lots of hands on things to do and an outdoor play area where the kids can let off their own steam. The outside veranda is super for watching the trains go by, both steam and historic diesel as it runs the whole length of the building. You can pop into the licensed cafe for a drink, snack or full meal. No car park because you are intended to get there by train, although there is limited disabled parking just by the building. A full return train ticket from Kidderminster to Bridgnorth gives you free entry to the Engine House. The trains are only suitable for standard sized wheelchairs as the vintage carriages were all built way before the Disability Discrimination Act. If you drive there, parking is up the road at the country park car park (not Severn Valley Railway) and a clearly signed footpath leads you down. It's uphill on the way back though! You have to pay to get in if you don't have a full return...
Read moreThe Engine House is a wonderful museum of the troubled history of the Severn Valley Railway and its restoration.
In my view ts best visited by train - getting off the SVR at Highley station, then crossing the tracks & taking a 2 minute walk.If you do arrive by train & have your ticket, entry is free.
Theres a small SVR gift shop as well as some interactive dislays & informative exhibitions ...in addition, there are some 6 steam locomotives (now retired from service/awaiting restoration), a mail sorting coach (think the great train robbery) and a ww2 royal coach.
All undercover in a more modern purpose built exhibition building.
There's a cafe that overlooks the line so you can watch the odd train going past. If youre really lucky as I was, theres an occasional low level RAF C130 flypast.
Good range of cafe type food including sandwiches, baked potatoes as well as reasonably priced drinks. Coffee was quite good too.
Dogs are permitted in the Engine House exhibition/museum. Top tip ... don't rush it ... slow down and take your time to get there, soak in the fantastic countryside, informative displays, have a brew &...
Read moreIt was a lovely day out , got the 1st train from Bridgnorth and went straight to Kidderminster, got off and spent a good 30mins in the museum followed by some lovely cake and a fantastic mug of tea. Left on a train terminating at The Engine House. We spent 2hrs here going round the museum and having a great time sorting the letters on the mail train. We were disappointed with the cafe upstairs, tables were messy and when we went for food, 2 sausage rolls and chips plus 2 chicken pies and chips, the sausage rolls were soo dried up we couldn't use the wooden cutlery on them as the forks broke due to them being too dry and hard. The pies were not so bad but 2 pies between 4 doesn't cut it. Other than that, the day was excellent. What I forgot to add was that the stations were all decked out in halloween decorations, absolutely brilliant. (Halloween trains are classed as special trains and require...
