The Museum (FREE Entry !) also allows admission to the nearby Butterfly House (open April to Halloween). Although it is a small museum, it can nonetheless provide a good & interesting half day out - with the surrounding park & Butterfly House. Local History & Ancient Egypt are the principal themes, but there is also a well stocked shop with plenty of tempting souvenirs (especially for kids) & hot beverages. The staff are nice & friendly (& in the Butterfly House, quite knowledgeable as well !) Although I visited in mid August, there weren't a lot of Butterflies in the Butterfly House, but there was very cheap Tea & Coffee there (plus low cost souvernirs) - together with the chance to handle some bugs ! Worth a visit, definitely. Oh, and the toilets in the Museum are worth a visit too - for the art on...

Another incredible green space in the middle of built up area been going there since I was a toddler. There used to be fish 🐟in the lake mainly stickle backs but some coi and boating🚣‍♂️. Disappointingly the fish and the boats have gone just swans and ducks🦆 now which were grossly overfed. The museum was closed due to covid but the walk through the park was excellent and brought back many happy memories. There's also an observatory ( not generally open) and there used to be a butterfly house🦋. Only ever saw it open once no one seems to know why it closed if there we're fish, boats and the butterfly House was open would get 5 🌟 stars all day long. Oh and there used to be a cafe/ restaurant but some nob burnt it down and the planks in charge decided not to rebuild it. Was a fantastic...

A lovely piece of history, great for the kids with clubs and activities running throughout the School holidays. Lots of topics throughout the museum which are condensed enough to keep kids interested. Lots of great historical displays and artifacts. My children loved the mummy leg and the enormous dolls house! There is an activity room with books bricks, dressing up displays ect which was lovely to sit and relax in while the children played. There are toilets and refreshments and a lovely little gift shop that has affordable little treasures. My children spent a pound each and were happy with their gift. Staff were very lovely with the children and very patient. Thankyou for a...

How have I failed to visit this gem for so long? I've been to the park so many times but never been to the museum. Came for the first time and today with my daughter and was blown away by the place, its contents and above all the friendliness of all the staff. In the house we received a warm welcome and a brief introduction to where everything was and then in the recently reopened butterfly house a personal tour, a talk on various bugs, use of microscopes and more, the passion was evident. Clean, well laid out, full of content and free, we're lucky to have access to things like this and it deserves all the support we can give it.

A wonderful little museum mainly about the local area of Dewsbury, Batley and Heckmondwike, a real hidden gem. I live in the area but have never been, they say you don’t do the tourist trail in your own area and sadly, that’s true as this museum is fab. Rooms dedicated to local dignitaries and famous building and places in the area. A room showing typical holiday destinations in the 19th century. Lots of information and stories from local people about living in the area. A beautiful interior. So glad we decided to explore on our doorstep
