Set in the Pennine hills around Marsden, Huddersfield is this little gem. We parked near to the railway station which is above the village as the canal runs alongside the railway line. It's a lovely tranquil 15 minute walk along gravel towpath with a parallel woodland walk alongside to the Standedge Tunnel and visitor centre. We walked there and got the free barge shuttle back, although the barge do hope people will donate as it's a voluntary run service. The mill is where the museum is although we didn't go in as was only out for a walk being reasonably local. There is a cafe (converted pub)which serves warm drinks and snacks and has a loo. It is adjacent to where the main barge through the tunnel departs and alights. There are picnic tables and plenty of green space to sit and while away. After our visit we took a stroll down the hillside to the village which has eateries and a beautiful church area to stop. A good day out if you're doing the tunnel too....
Read moreI would have given more stars but the information centre said it was open in both the app and website was closed at 12pm (opening hours stated 9am5pm). There was only one vague map of the area and the downloadable one was not clear when you zoomed in, no leaflets were left out. I would not trust the opening hours stated which is a shame as I would have liked to know more about the area, wildlife and routes. The moors themselves were very good. I am only basing it on the bit I saw but very atmospheric and bleak. I'm not sure if I go back as I would like a guide/information. Please if you read this update your opening times if a family travel 2 hours just to see you it is to say the least disappointing when you can't get the most out of the day because...
Read moreBeautiful moorland managed by National Trust. Accessible into Marsden by frequent train (Manchester - Huddersfield line) and buses. Good bus service out of Huddersfield and hourly service from Oldham over the moors (walkers can alight and step right into the moors) through to Huddersfield. For those who prefer the flat, there is good canal walking towards Huddersfield with bus or train return options. There's a great cultural micro climate along the valley, so keep your eyes open for gigs and the such. This area is a real tonic. You only have to sit, have a brew and breathe the air to improve your day! Many thanks to the National Trust for their stewardship of the moorland...
