A Hidden Gem – Salt the Pig at Putlake Farm
We recently went camping in Swanage and had originally planned to stay at a local campsite. Unfortunately, due to a mix-up with the booking dates, we arrived to find our pitch wasn’t actually booked until the following week. After trying another nearby campsite -which was fully booked- we happened to drive past Salt the Pig at Putlake Farm, and we’re so glad we did!!
It was around 5 or 6 PM when we pulled in, and we were greeted by a lovely lady near reception doing rounds on her buggy. I believe she was named Dani. She said there was space available and explained she could only take cash at that time, as the tills weren’t in operation so late in the day. We only had a card, but she was very understanding and reassured us that we could pop into the café in the morning to settle up. She even checked in with us later and brought over some shower tokens, telling us not to worry about the payment and to settle it the next day. She was warm, helpful, and genuinely kind exactly the welcome we needed after a long day and we were so greatful to find such an accommodating campsite with such lovely people.
The next day, we were out for most of it and didn’t manage to settle up the fee before returning.
The next day we went to the café to pay and was directed to the soft play area, where I met a lovely lady called Bev. She added our two-night stay and the shower tokens to a tab and kindly tried to process the card payment, but my bank card didn’t go through and it seemed we needed to move some money around. Bev couldn’t have been more understanding! She told us to pop back, gave us shower tokens, and even charged my phone for me while we went to shower. She was so generous and accommodating, it really stood out.
Later, after showering and packing down our pitch, we come back to the cafe & soft play for breakfast. Although it was just about to close, Bev and the team still took our order: Three breakfasts, one chocolate waffle, two iced coffees and two teas—and even added a pair of socks to the tab! Bev also kindly offered to charge my mum’s phone. Her compassion and helpfulness made us feel incredibly welcome and looked after. I even seen another camper coming to collect her ice packs that the staff had let her freeze in their freezers!
Anyway the food was absolutely fantastic. Lydia, who cooked our breakfasts last minute after such a busy morning, did an amazing job. Everything was fresh and full of flavour! From the thick bacon and chipolatas, to the bubble and squeak with fresh veg, the juicy tomatoes on the vine. The eggs were farm fresh, and the waffles were made to order, topped with warm chocolate and a sprinkle of nuts. It was all delicious nothing greasy or pre made, just proper, fresh & hearty food.
Before heading home, we spent time at the farm playing in the soft play, feeding the goats, and holding the guinea pigs. We also had a lovely chat with a girl who was out tending to the animals; she was friendly and clearly loved what she was doing, which made the experience even nicer.
All in all, Salt the Pig at Putlake Farm turned what could have been a stressful situation into one of the most memorable parts of our trip. The staff are genuinely wonderful; kind, accommodating, and thoughtful. The food was excellent, the campsite peaceful, and the farm perfect for both kids and adults. We’ll definitely be coming back! Couldn’t recommend it enough. Thank you to all staff listed and everybody running the farm you’ve really made a little weekend break rememberable for all the...
Read moreWas not really in line with the overhyped reviews! Probably our timing was bad whatever is the case, I am not returning to this place.
We had been camping in the place and I would rate both the campsite and the adventure area as two stars.
Campsite - while the pitch/farm is in a good location, the facilities are not enough. If you are looking for comfort+joy of camping then this is not the place for you. Improvements -
Just one wash up area, with a potential of 15+ tents on a given day, one washup area to clean the vessels is not enough. Only two showers - I think there were around 25+ people on the day we were there. You have to simply wait to get your turn or don't bath
Adventure farm - While the pamphlet shows the multiple schedules of the three events they run, the events don't happen accordingly. Unfortunately we went before the last round of the day. Though we entered well in advance, we were told by the staff that some were finished already. We had to escalate to get things done. While we were offered to participate the next day, the experience was already damaged. The person who collected the money said she had no control on what happened in the farm, after explaining the situation she took ownership to look...
Read moreWicked little gem I found. Has plenty of free parking. Has indoor and outdoor activities. We went on a wet day and still had loads of fun. It's like Falmer Palmers but almost half the price. You have a big indoor play area, which has older and younger sections which is great as I have a 1, 9 and 13 year old and all of them really enjoyed it. They have a cafe which is decently priced. (Although we only got hot drinks) think they were about £2 for hot chocolate. They do lamb feeding, handling the guinea pigs, they even brought out a pony and allowed the kids to groom her, All at no extra cost. The fo have a tractor ride but was closed due to weather (think this costs more) the kids enjoyed going round petting and looking at the animals. And they did have an outdoor park area but again as it was wet we didn't use it. But half the animals are under cover anyway. So kids still had a good visit and we saw the outdoor animals when the drizzle settled. The staff were really friendly and helpful and we're cleaning the tables at intervals. Had cleaning stations, and toilets with a baby change table. A great day out and everyone from my 1 year old to their great grandma...
