Temple Newsam is a hidden gem in Leeds, offering a rich blend of history, nature, and family-friendly activities. Whether you're interested in exploring historic houses, meeting farm animals, or simply enjoying beautiful gardens, this estate has something for everyone.
The centerpiece of Temple Newsam is its grand Tudor-Jacobean mansion, steeped in history and filled with fascinating artifacts. As you wander through the house, you’re treated to beautifully preserved rooms that offer a glimpse into the lives of the estate’s former residents. From opulent furniture to priceless artwork, the attention to detail is impressive, and there are often knowledgeable guides on hand to share stories and insights about the house's past.
Adjacent to the house is Temple Newsam’s working farm, a real treat for families, especially those with young children. The farm is home to a variety of animals, including rare breeds of pigs, sheep, goats, and cattle. It’s a wonderful, hands-on experience where kids can see the animals up close, learn about farming, and even feed some of the animals during scheduled times. The farm is well-maintained and offers a charming, rustic contrast to the grandeur of the house.
The gardens at Temple Newsam are equally enchanting. The formal gardens are beautifully designed, with vibrant flower beds, well-manicured lawns, and serene water features that make for a perfect spot to relax or take a leisurely stroll. The walled garden, in particular, is a highlight, offering a colorful array of plants and flowers, depending on the season. For those who love a more natural setting, the expansive parkland surrounding the estate is ideal for picnics, dog walks, or simply soaking in the views.
Temple Newsam also offers a range of seasonal events, from guided tours and exhibitions in the house to family-friendly activities at the farm and gardens. There’s always something new to discover, making it a place you can return to time and time again.
In summary, Temple Newsam is a must-visit destination in Leeds. With its historic house, charming farm, and picturesque gardens, it offers a diverse and enjoyable experience for visitors of all ages. Read moreI have been to Temple Newsam before, several times but when I saw the Northan Lights show advertised I thought I would take my wife, grandchildren and dog who was suitably dressed in a Christmas jumper and flashing collar. We booked online which gave us a time slot which I don’t think is very strictly monitored as its only to alleviate the crowds arriving all at one go, We drove there and although there was a queue, it only took a few minutes before we entered the car park which was muddy but not to much and we expected it to be honest. We decided to have some food first and this is the only complaint, £15 for a hotdog with chips and £17 if you wanted the same with cheese on the chips. Whilst I understand all the supposed reasons for the rise in prices due to the economic crisis, it felt like a rip off. Anyway, we went through garden entrance where the stewards checked the online ticket and in we went. Wow, it was spectacular, honestly, we could have spent hours there, well I could, everywhere you looked there was something that appeared different every minute as the lights changed in both colour and sequence, with accompanying music. Could I pick out the best? Well, I really liked the leaves in the water and the river of light but it was all stunning. After we had completed the light trail we went on the fair at the exit. Dodgems and Ferris wheel, like children again, we were and I loved it. My congratulations to the organisers, designers and all the lads and lasses who must have spent days doing all the intricate positioning of the lights and...
