Great location. Lots on history on this old lighthouse. The lighthouse was constructed in 1776, serving an essential role in maritime navigation. The tower is a tapered cylindrical brick structure featuring a balcony and a lantern. It was measured to be 16 meters (52 feet) high in 1776, with a base diameter of 7.8 meters (25.75 feet) and a top diameter of 4.9 meters (16 feet). Some sources indicate that it may actually be 18 meters (59 feet) tall or even 60 feet.
As a Grade II listed building, it holds the distinction of being the oldest lighthouse in Wales.
Visiting is easy and there is a car park at the site (53.35321642414517, -3.319730302110794). Access is easy from here. There are no facilities at this car park but an alternative car park close by (53.35196453461079, -3.3168028637702056)...
Read moreTalacre beach is my go to place for peace and a long walk in pure air. There's rocks by the light house for kiddies to explore. Sand dunes to trek if you want to get fit and one big one hidden if you can find it. There's little pools of shallow water if the tides out for dogs to bath in and cool down in the heat. You can park in Ganfer wen car park for £1 for 2 hours or £2 for 4 hours and walk the Boardwalk then the dunes to the beach. Just take the boardwalk from the car park and keep to the right at the first fork. Then right again until theres an opening on your left by the tree. Look behind that sandy path by the side of the brick chimney structure until you see the top of the lighthouse popping out of the dunes. There's usually a large lig at tge opening to find...
Read moreOn our visit there were a couple of people accompanied by their 'furry friends' sharing this wonderful space. The sandy beach spread forever out towards the horizon and the grass topped dunes, swaying in the sea breeze. The tide was creeping in, lapping up around the base of the lighthouse, while a cool crisp bluster met us as we wandered under the glow of the golden orb, a mixed salty musty scent pricked our nostrils. Heaven on earth as Wales was nudging towards the end of the second lockdown, glorious blue sky and the sense of just being free... Certainly blew away a few cobwebs, and highly recommend, when able to do so, everyone should treat themselves to a little piece of this paradise, it certainly ticked many...
