The area is okay, though nothing to write home about. What ruined the experience for me was the unfair and predatory parking system.
We overstayed by a few minutes and their unforgiving automatic camera system produced a £100 parking fine sent to my door a few days later!
I contacted the forest centre to explain that our family live nearby and are regular visitors, and asked if they would be willing to contact the parking provider (who operates on their behalf) to waive the fine, given the circumstances.
They were utterly dismissive toward me, and when I replied asking them to reconsider they didn't even bother replying.
Honestly this kind of attitude from any organisation is enough to make me never go there again, and would certainly not recommend it to anyone. There is plenty of lovely countryside all around which you can enjoy without having to risk falling prey to a greedy, money-grabbing scheme such...

I am told that they system does not make mistake but on this occasion i am totally confident that it has. The shame is that i paid with coin and not card so i have no evidence.
