One of Cadw's free to visit sites, the castle remains are quite sizeable for free entry and have breathtaking views of the surrounding area. Many of the original features remain including the well, gatehouse, and foundations for main buildings such as the hall, kitchen etc. The car park and entrance is accessible via foot from Montgomery town centre (past Town Hall and the Dragon Hotel and carry straight on up hill) or by car (past Town Hall, turn left onto Kerry Street, then Kerry Road before forking right up a steep hill) and is located next to TG Morgan (as per Google Maps Sep 2023). The path to the castle is short and level and part of this comprises the outer bailey that has now been partially erased by time and later buildings. Entering the castle there are two wooden access bridges followed by cobbles, we managed a pushchair round the site...

Montgomery Castle sits above the lovely town and you can either walk up the steep hill from the square or drive up the less steep access and park in the car park.

The views from this partially ruined castle are really good as the castle sits on a rocky outcrop and the earthworks are very impressive. See my pictures posted after the visit.

There are good information boards explaining the history in Welsh and English and bridges over the moats, so this is a great place for families and looks to be great fun for supervised children!

We enjoyed our visit. If you use the path access halfway up the steep hill on the right, watch the path as it falls away steeply and it needs some maintenance. Walking up the steep hill is best at the moment.

I'd happily give this...

Montgomery Castle, although a ruin, is an interesting and attractive feature just above the pretty town of Montgomery. The castle has free parking and there is no charge to enter the grounds. The castle is not far from the town, perhaps ten minutes or so. If you want to walk, as you would imagine, is uphill, but the road is a good surface for walking. The views from the castle and castle itself make it a very worthwhile detour if you are in the vicinity. Montgomery is pleasant, parking is free and normally available. The town hall has decent toilets...

Standing proud on a ridge overlooking the countryside of the English, Welsh border, and the small but architectural Georgian town of Montgomery, you can see just why this castle was built in such a commanding position! There’s a small car park which on the day we visited, filled up quick, it’s clearly a popular place to visit when the weathers good. A good example of a border castle, you can get lost walking the grounds and taking in the sites, sounds and views across the countryside - maybe on a nice day it’s the place for a picnic and making an afternoon of it.

Ruins of the castle destroyed during the civil war by parliment forces as it was deemed a royalist stronghold. Not best signed from town and quite a steep climb to the top of the hill where it stands but a very intresting visit. The view from the top is panoramic and its easy to see why it was built here as between the castles of Mongomery and Powis they would close the severn vally to any force coming from east or west. We enjoyed it but bear in mind the steep climb. Some one will more than likley tell me there is an easy way up. If there is CADW please sign.

Visited in summer 2020, when I had my Shropshire vacation. We can park near the castle, but we have to find the narrow road lead up to the hill. Because I didn't find it, I parked in the village at the bottom of the hill and walked up, it wasn't the easiest. At the ruins there is no toilet or cafe, so please be prepared for this, however, there are plenty cafes, restaurant, tea room in the village. Nice history of ruins, easy to walk around, few information plate and 1 bench. Nice view and beauty spot, but not recommended to wheelchair users or baby buggies.
