If you're passing Nether Stowey on the A39 (in either direction), it's well worth diverting in to the village to see the castle remains. It's an old motte and bailey castle and has great views of the surrounding countryside (and Hinkley Point - of interest to locals). You should be able to park up easily enough and the walk is not long or particularly steep. If you're stopped in the village already and are taking in the Coleridge Museum (writer Samuel Coleridge) or at the Ancient Mariner, the castle is just a few minutes walk away. Our ancient hillforts and castles are dotted across Somerset. Stop in and see one. Get some fresh air and a bit of exercise and take in the magnificent views. This one is completely free to visit. You can even bring your dog up there.

Very nice earth fort, a lot still to see considering it was built in the 1100s, it's free to go around and dog friendly, the view from the top are stunning, it's about 10mins walk from the village centre

Park in the high street, goto what 3 words (///shot.market.neckline) for the entrance to the castle as it's not well signposted.

We clambered to the top of the hill with the 11th century remains of Nether Stowey Castle. Just enough of the foundation stonework remains to make this a fascinating place to explore, and sit and ponder life back when it was occupied. The vista across the Severn and Somerset country is spectacular and well worth the climb on it's own. It's quite steep with no formal path so caution and a good pair of shoes are recommended, and some brambles or nettles are always present to sting the unwary. Sheep grazing on the hill...

A 9m high mound surrounded by a 2m wide ditch, that used to be the site of a Norman castle. The castle was destroyed in the fifteenth century so nothing remains but the earthworks. Climbing to the top of the motte is a little tough as there isn't an obvious route up, but once you get up you do there is a pretty decent view in...
