South Park is one of Oxford’s largest green spaces and a place where the city truly breathes. Spread across rolling lawns on Headington Hill, it offers sweeping views back towards the Oxford skyline—one of the few places where you can see the famous “dreaming spires” rising above the trees. On a clear evening, the view of the towers glowing in the sunset is unforgettable.
Historically, the land was once part of Headington Manor estate, later transformed into public parkland in the 20th century. Today, South Park is not just a recreational field but also a cultural venue. It has hosted major events such as Radiohead’s legendary homecoming concert in 2001, food festivals, community fairs, and open-air performances. This blend of everyday calm and occasional festivity gives it a unique character.
On a normal day, the park is wide and open, perfect for walking, jogging, or simply lying on the grass. Families come with children, students gather for picnics, and dog walkers trace the many paths that cross the slope. In spring the trees bloom, in summer the park feels alive with gatherings, in autumn the colours turn golden, and in winter the frost makes it crisp and quiet.
Unlike the hidden solitude of Port Meadow or Lye Valley, South Park is more of a social space. It’s where you see Oxford’s residents enjoying ordinary life, but with the bonus of an extraordinary view. Bring a blanket, some food, and if you’re lucky with the weather, it may become one of your favourite spots...
Read moreGreat Park to visit at any time of year. There are events all year round from common people around may to this fantastic fireworks display. The fireworks display is absolutely fantastic! It's in aid of local charities. Run by the Oxford round table. Incredibly reasonable price to get in. Various levels of ticket from a VIP tent, family tent which is great if you have little ones or SEN kids who have a habit of running. The general admission. For the quality of the display it's brilliant! Lots of food stands and fair rides. The volunteers are incredibly helpful. I'm in a wheelchair and they helped me get up and down the park by taking me and carrying my wheelchair. They couldn't have been kinder to me and my disabled daughter. The volunteers worked hard to make sure the entire event was safe, stunning and a lot of fun. Despite a few complaints from those who don't understand the concept that grass regrows the place soon goes back to its original state. It's an event I'd definitely recommend you see...
Read moreLove coming here on my own, with my son, with family and with friends. It's got a large spacial grassy area. Fun to kick a ball, throw a frisbee, fly a kite or drone. There's a recently repaired basketball half-court as well as free-to-use exercise equipment. There are benches close enough to each other that if one is occupied you can stroll to the next, but far enough from each other that you can enjoy your space. There are plenty of tall trees to relax under the shade. A few have been brought down by strong winds but they just become another thing to climb or search for bugs with the kids. Plenty of dog - walking space.
It's got a slope from which you can enjoy a lovely view of the Oxford Spires.
It doesn't have any restrooms, however, it's probably better that way as they tend to become a druggies paradise. Now that I think of it, you can sometimes find used needles by the benches. Probably wouldn't roll on the grass. If you're going to sit, bring a...
